Anyone make their own Buckshot?

Not quite buckshot, but I make .458 round balls and shoot them 3 at a time out of my 45-70. It's a single cavity mold and it's very time consuming. If I were going to make actual buckshot it would have to be a 6 cavity or so to make it worth it time wise.

I cast my own first with a Lee .319 ball mold (2 cav) and now with the OO Buck mold .330-3" (18 cav). I think it's worth it, and the bigger mold is much more efficient than the 2 cavity. They also make a .360" 2 ball mold wich is about 000 Buck. Sharpshooter multi cavity buck molds are on eBay all the time. Check out the Cast Boolits forum for more info.

That sounds interesting...what do you use the '3 shot load' for? Grouse?

The 45-70 is such a versatile cartridge - which is probably why it has survived for so long.

I use the Lee .312 2 cavity RB mould to make up 9 pellet (between 0 and 1) buckshot. It takes time to cast but works great in my guns. If you have the time a 10lb lee pot will make a lot of buckshot.

I also load the tumble lubed .312 roundballs in my .303 Brit over 7 grains of 2400 for a fun plinking load

Does anyone make a 000 buck mold? I don't know why but I perfer it over 00 buck.
MY #000 buck load
I use a .36 cal ball mold for a black powder pistol I used to own.
- I use 7 balls in a WAA12r wad being pushed by 30 grains of 800X powder. In a Rem Nitro Gold hull.
It works fine and patterns good.
I just loaded up #00 buck
- I used 10 balls of #00 buck in a WAA12R wad being pushed by 31.5 grains of 800X powder in a Rem gun club hull

I hope this helps, Brad
