Has anyone here gone and seeked out brass that uses small pistol primers for 45ACP? I'm getting my first 1911 soon. Other calibers I'm interested in getting in pistol are 9mm and .38sp which both take small primers and I'm wondering if there is any harm in using brass that takes small primers for 45 ACP to keep things uniform.

Where can one find 45 ACP brass that takes small pistol primers?

absolutely no harm in using SPP 45acp brass, though most people like LPP 45acp brass. which is good if you want SPP brass as most people will sell it for less for the most part.

i don't care if it's small or large pistol primer but what i do is use 50 round trays and hand sort between the 2. once i have enough small pistol brass (1k is more then enough for me) i will convert my pro 1000 press to small pistol and load them up. i don't change my powder charges as i'm not using anywhere near max charges so it won't matter.

as for where to get SPP 45acp brass, put a want ad in the EE. if your wanting to buy factory ammo and keep the brass winchester, federal and ICC usually have small pistol primer pockets in their non toxic loads. CCI aluminum is SPP, but they don't recommend reloading, i however do reload it for fun and for when i'm not going to be able to retrieve my brass easily.

I reload .45, 9mm & .38's. I use the .45 cases with small primers for the following reasons.
I only need to buy SP primers for all 3 calibers.
I don't have to change my primer feed system to feed large primers & then back to SP.
I don't have to worry about trying to force a LP primer into a .45 SP pocket with nasty results.

I find it a lot easier .

45 a.c.p. Small primered brass

Custom Reloading in maple Ridge has a large quantity of 45 a.c.p. brass I both large and small primers.
All small primed brass is fully case prepped with swaged primer pockets.
Cost -$125.00 per 1000
Take care.

Originally small primed .45's were from Winchester NT ammo. The 'NT' meaning Non-Toxic. Especially as Winchester doesn't think they are reloadable. Nothing not reloadable about it though. Same brass with a small primer pocket. Not really worth the effort to track down.
AL cases aren't reloadable. AL, like mild steel, isn't elastic like brass.

Exactly the reasons I was planning to do this. Don't have 9mm or 38sp yet but those are calibers I plan to get within the next year.

Folks take a look at this link. Do I understand correctly that this Super X stuff (heavy metal free) is what uses small primers? What about the cheaper ones on the page ?

Might take longer than I expected for my pistol reloading setup and I'll be itching to try my 1911 once she's here. Might a well buy the ammo whose brass I want.

While I haven't had an issues with aluminum cases accept for primer pockets loosening in 9mm after 4 reloads I wouldn't start your reloading career with it. Get brass cased first then once you have more experience try aluminum.

When I first started shooting and reloading 45ACP I bought Blaser factory ammo and reloaded the small primer brass. When I got into reloading 45 Colt which has large primers I switched my 45 ACP to large primers as well. Then I ordered 1000 primers to save a couple of bucks.

Made a trip to the new Cabela's in Barrie, Ontario on the way down from a fishing trip up north and they had the Blaser Brass in 45 ACP for not to terrible a price. I'm not quite setup yet to reload pistol so I figured I might just pick some up so that I can shoot when my 1911 arrives in the post.

I just have a press set up for each, easier that way. - dan

Yeah, I did the same. However, being the doom & gloom guy I am I have laid in a stock of about 700 SPP 45 ACP cases just in case Obama pulls another anti-gun stunt and the hoarders go nuts again. That way I can mix & match my 45 cases and primers to what is available so I'm not out of the 45 shooting business.
