I think I am going to start reloading this caliber on my dillon 550b...any tips? I would love to hear some recomendations and what loads you're using with which bullets.

I have the books but currently only reload 45acp, so I am going to have a bunch to learn.

Thanks to anyone kind enough to share some knowledge.

I don't know if I would reload this caliber on a 550B. This cartridge is pretty jammy and I would want to be careful with powder charges etc. I load for a 7mm Wsm which is almost the same thing. I know that my Browning A-bolt really likes Magpro powder but that is really hard to come by. RL 22 is good stuff also for Wsms. Nothing overly special that I do-just keep the case length trimmed to spec and stay within the cartridge OAL. A good single stage is probably the way to go, that way you can keep a better eye on things.

The 550 isn't auto-indexing, and I could do one cartridge at a time...I am not going to lie, I'm a bit nervous about reloading this round, but ammo is so expensive and I am not happy with the accuracy of the "cheap stuff", you know, the ones that are just 3 bucks a round!

i'm not sure why you would be nervous about loading this cal in particular (unless you know something i don't). get lots of sources for starting points, try different powders, pick one that isn't giving the highest velocities yet is filling the case up fairly good. start at the recommended minimum charge, maybe make a hand full with .5-1 grain more powder and go shoot...starting with the lowest charged rounds first. shoot 'em, check the cases for pressure signs, check your accuracy, move up if everything looks good until your happy with how your grouping and what the shot cases are telling you. have fun.

I'm a big fan of 270 WSM and here are my loads:
  • varmint - Hornady 110gr V-Max with Varget (3400-3500fps)
  • deer - Barnes 110gr TSX with H4350 (3400-3500fps)
  • elk/moose - Nosler 140gr Accubond with H4350 or H4831 (3050fps)
  • heavy bullets - Nosler 150g and over Partition with H4831 (2950fps)
  • hunter's favorite - Nolser 140gr Accubond with Retumbo (almost 3200fps!)
I love using H4350 because it delivers great accuracy and very good velocity.
Many hunter swear by a case full of Retumbo topped by Nosler 140gr Accubond but I find the muzzle blast excessive!
