As long as the barrels look ok, people tend to overlook the gas system!

I reload for the SKS mainly because the range I go to doesn't allow steel core or jacketed bullets.Gonna try and find a good outdoor range in the spring though,where I can shoot whatever I want and have a blast shooting off tons of surplus or at least cheaper new production like MFS. My current favorite load is a 123 gr V-Max over 28 gr of 4895 using CCI primers with OAL of 2.19". Yesterday I shot a 3" group at 40 yards out of my 60's production Chinese rifle which I personally consider to be pretty good. My load kicked the crap out of that garbage S&B ammo I bought just for the brass(was also lucky enough to find a bunch of brass in the brass bucket at the range). Those V-Max bullets are pretty sweet and I also tried them in my Mosin with surprisingly accurate results.

Forgot to mention I also did the ejection port mod which greatly improves the condition of the ejected brass as well the vast majority of brass is not launched a mile down range

I sold my SKS-D years ago, kind of regret it now, but I used to cast bullets as well, and reload. Ammo used to be pricy down here, not sure what it is now.

A couple of posts said ''hard on brass'' I have 3 SKS and none of them hurt the brass in any way and I have had 3 others, gone now, that were the same. How does it damage the brass? Can you describe please?

I think the best answer here is buying them non-corrosive. Can someone confirm to me that the norinco ones are 100% non-corrosive? As in shooting 40-50 of them, put sks back in safe without cleaning, getting it out a month or two later without the slightest sign of rust?

I wouldn't shoot any gun with any ammo 40-50 times then just put it in the cbinet for a month or two without cleaning it.
Unless of cource I didn't like the gun very much.

I can make these babies for about 43 cents a piece, that's $8.70 per 20. If you have more money than time, buy non corrosive. If you have more time than money, learn to love reloading.

Dents in the casing walls from the ejection port and any overhead firing line structure. I'm willing to bet that the ejection port mod that seems to be so popular may very well help in this matter.

Dents don't bother me with my M14 and they bother me with the SKS. Just stay away from maximum loads and you'll be fine. Ever firing should iron those dents out nicely. Now lost brass is a problem. I might end up doing the ejection port mod.

The ejection port mod helps by ejecting the cases to the side which I believe keeps cases from contacting the op rod reducing damage.

Ciphery, i am not talking about storing for months after had shooting. Just being able to wait a fee days for the cleanup would not hurt, and i could just go thru a light & normal cleanup with G96 gun oil instead of the corrosive cleanup eith brake cleaner.
