I handled a new Norinco commander 1911 (one with a a square trigger guard) it looked alright but sights sucked, they both look ugly on the gun and sight picture isn't very good - they're just too small. Has anyone tried replacing them? anything fits without any heavy duty fitting?

From what I understand, no. You need to get the slide machined for popular sight profiles. Not all 'smiths are willing to do the work on Norks due to metal hardness. I'd call Gunnar at Armco, since not only does he sell the Commanders, he sells them tuned, and he will cut the slide for different sights if you want.

I don't know why norc did that, everything else is interchangeable, accept the grip screws I think. It is easy enough to get it smithed and it should be pretty inexpensive at least.

Nobody knows why Norinco does what it does.:p:D

In the case of a lot of the sights, especially low rear-mounted rear sights. The slide has to be milled anyway.
As far as the grip screws go, They are just fine. It's the grip screw bushings that have a different thread.;)

2 cents.

yes, but happily brownells sells oversized bushings, so you can buy them and a tap at the same time and in they go, easy peasy. Did my commander that way to put thinner grip panels on it.

Here are a few pics of the Norinco I just finished. Modifications include: Novak front and rear sights, bobbed mainspring housing, rounded trigger guard, match sear and hammer, Parkerize and KG GunKote.

that looks great! Armco did the work? how much was to install the sights?

Armco didn't do that! Arwen Ace (Casey from Tac Ord) is showing his own work. His own work on my gun :) I have had it for three days and already had it out to the range twice because it is such a pleasure to shoot, and it is shooting as good as it looks :D

Most of the popular aftermarket sights for 1911s will require machining of the slide to fit, be it on a Norinco or Colt.
