Spring is slowly coming to eastern Manitoba, but there's still lots of snow and ice in the bush. Usually I'm already baiting by now getting ready for the opener, but this year I'm probably at least two weeks behind. Anyone spotted any bears yet? I'm getting itchy to get out into the woods and doing something!

Yeah , the odd one is already crawling around in nopiming park, ,in fact the stupid little bear tried to run into my van head first. just a little 3 yr old(roughly) but they are definitely coming out now :)

Here in Québec the season opener is May 15th but you're not allowed to bait before May first , but last year we saw a couple bear around April 20th and we had a big winter but this year was better ( less snow ) so i think there must be a couple of bear out here and there.

I just pulled into Creston, BC basically the mountains from the Fraser Valley to here are still loaded with snow and very few roads are cleared for access and it is still surprisingly cold.

The bears maybe out in the lowest valleys but I am not seeing any sign anywhere.

Spent the day trying to get into the Flathead River Valley just west of Fernie turned around @ klm 31 to much snow to try getting in any further.

Snow it melted off a lot on the west facing slopes but there is absolutely no new sign around yet can't imagine bears doing anything other than sitting out beside their dens when the sun is shining.

So no tracks/sign of any kind...

Heading back to Elko to try for turkeys in the morning though... :D

Well, we're gonna start baiting this weekend but another cold snap has moved in and they're forecasting more for next weekend. I find that bears don't generally get to active until they can start eating greens and get their digestive systems going. Everything's just brown here, so I guess it's going to be late. Opening day is around the corner and I usually have an active bait by then. This year I haven't even got to my bait sites yet.

Just picked up my license and tag yesterday and taking a look for the first time today.

Uncle saw a big one a few days ago but was leaving the bush but wasn't able to get a shot.

The weather has been pretty warm the past couple weeks so I'm hoping to see something today.

Do polar bears count? Wildlife just had to put one down about 5km from my parents house. Had his hip dislocated. When I get home I'll try to get a couple pics on here.

There have been a few sightings up here over the last week; the thaw is progressing rapidly now, and the Athabasca River broke last night.

The snow in the bush is still a foot deep though, so I suspect another couple of weeks before we see much activity.
