Has anyone had a chance to handle one of the new for 2012 Winchester model 70 Alaskan's? If so, how would you rate fit and finish, stock etc and how is felt recoil? They sure look sweet in the brochure. One in .338WM is on my wish-list.

I handled a couple in the Glendale cabelas a few weeks ago.

The fit and finish was no different than the current model 70s, which is overall pretty good for the price point.

The stock isn't a true copy of the pre-64 monte Carlo, it is pretty much a classic sporter with a comb added. It also has the rear sight boss but does not utilize the barrel screw (which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned)

I don't think you would regret buying one.

I wasn't impressed with the machining of the rear sight boss on the Cabela's Anniversary model i saw in Edmonton. The corners were sharp which, to me, is laziness in the CAD process. It should have been rounded off on the corners. That was enough to spoil it for me as the sight boss is the reason to have the anniversary model.

I want one in .30-06 something fierce. I don't care if it costs more - this would be my ".30-06 for life" anyway. :D

Well, they have one at Epps...:D

I have been drooling over that already.. I have to go pick up a .22 rifle when it arrives at Epps, and it will likely kill me to look at the Model 70 (of course I will have to look at it.) because I have no money for that right now.

.338

I've had a few M70 .338's over the years, but really like the look of the new Alaskan. Especially its 25" barrel and iron-sights.The .338 Alaskan that Eppe's had went quick. Hope was a CGN'r that bought it and gives us a range -report.
