Anyone seen a deer with this before?

I have seen a couple of mule deer with similar growths over the years.

One was a doe that lived out behind our house. She was there for 4 years and had fawns each spring. I at first thought it was a tumor but as she was otherwise healthy I started to think it was a cyst that developed around a stick puncture.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. We live/hunt close to the US Border. We have been warned that deer from Montana have been found to have CWD and there are now cases reported in Idaho. All deer harvested in our region must have their heads turned in for analysis. It is just a matter of time. It can lie dormant in deer for up to 8 years so there could be deer here already infected. FWIW, I don't think that deer is displaying signs of CWD. I think it's something else.

Take it to your local office and you'll likely get a new tag issued as it would be deemed unfit for consumption.

From what i have read, doesn't show symptoms. I believe it is detectable, which is why they want to examine tissue in the head. However, i am not a biologist, just passing on what i have researched.

Is the location of the buck , down stream or wind of big commercial , or cities??
Looks like a good spot for ticks..
Or barbed wire,,, wound that's infected

Tumors aren’t a symptom of CWD.

surface growth - Most likely abscess due to injury.
Could be a tumour but animal looks quite healthy otherwise.

I once took a whitetail with a foreleg swelling like that.. and a damaged antler bed, turned out to be a healing multiple fracture with substantial bone growth, probably from a car strike.

I've heard reports of deer in Montana about 50 miles from the border but that's the closest I've heard so far.
