Anyone Sharpen their SKS's Bayonet? Or just take it off?

The SKS is the only rifle I know of that comes with an attached bayo. Removing it neuters the gun and just looks goofy IMO.

You are right on that, The first man killed in WW2 died from bayonet. Sep 1st 1939 around 1am Polish patrol near German border, in Silesia Poland ambused Germans that crossed over the border. One unlucky Gerry got a bayonet in the belly and died.
This story was published in number of newspapers including Vancouver Sun in 1989 plus still alive in 1939 Polish Veteran was interviewed by Polish and German Media

Schlesien is German is it not?

Germans think it is Germany, Pols think it is Poland but Silesians think of themselfs as diffrent from both. They are Slavs speak Czech based Polish with lots of German words in it.
It is all Poland now but in 1939 the border run through middle of Silesia. The incident in question happened in the forest near Przczyna Castle it is about 40km west of Cracow

yes the new issued bayonet does have a sharpening stone in the sheath its not a bad little stone either. i know my bayonet is sharp as a razor. it also has that groove in the sheath and a hole in the tip of the knife to use as a wire cutter. not a bad idea.

Hey, there was at least one occurence of a british grunt bayoneting an enemy in Irak, back in '03 it think.

His rifle jammed and he ended up bayoneting 2 talibans as they were coming around the corner of a building.

AFAIK it's one of the only report of actual use of a bayonet in the last 20 years. There was a British bayonet charge during the Falklands War too.
I was born during that war, but it's got nothing to do with bayonets.

edit: modern bayonets may be sharp, that's because they are more a knife than a bayonet. Sharpening a SKS fixed bayonet is retarded. If you really want to do it, buy a spare one and sharpen it so that you still have a normal one when you realize that sharpening a SKS bayonet is retarded.

I wasn't sure about bayonets and didn't realize that most were not sharp. I thought they were similar to knives. I do realize that it will probably never be used, sharp or dull. I was thinking that somebody has sharpened one. But apparently I'm retarded. At least I know how to spell Iraq. Doubt anyone would use a bayonet for a weapon or any other legal purpose in Canada (or is it Kanada) in 2011. I guess they just look cool.

If I lived where it were legal to sharpen a Bayonet... I probably would make it sharp enough to shave with....... Just because I could & it were legal.

:)

Sorry, I wrote it the French way. Didn't remember it was spelled different in English. Still, it looks good with a K, like more evil or something.

It's great you now see the light, and have therefore been spared the feeling of 'gee, now i'm stuck with a stupid sharp bayonet on my SKS'.

Still, even in places where it's legal, you don't sharpen a fixed bayonet. It's always on the gun!!!

I must say I didn't know sharp bayonets were illegal in California. Seriously, what's the sharpness criteria?

the only way for that to happen is to TWIST the blade after entry unless you penetrate straight into the bone- look at the way the blade is configured- see how it's SMOOTH on both sides- heck, it's just a KNIFE when you remove the rifle-mounted capabilities- at best, a SPEAR( hello, gatehouse)

I assume it was a bayonet for an M14 or M16 that he used. I don't know how he got it jammed, but I'll take his word that it happened and that it wasn't a pleasant experience.

I think the bayonet for the Jungle Carbine is one of the nicest.

It actually looks like it would make a good utility/combat knife when not affixed to the rifle.

They're worth a bloody fortune now though.

st1264, my best advice is that if a bayonet was dull then keep it dull, if sharp then keep it sharp. Sharp bayonets were meant to be used for cutting (therefore will have a steel that can take a reasonable edge), dull bayonets were not. I don't see an army in the last 60 years giving out a bayonet as dull as the SKS one and expecting all the solders to sharpen them especially when they supply no tools to do so.

I see no real non-mil purpose for the SKS bayonet to bother sharpening it. You did buy a military rifle so the bayonet is cool, keep it on the rifle for looks/history or take it off as you prefer. Enjoy you SKS!

SCOTTISH troops fixed bayonets and fought hand to hand with a Shi’ite militia in southern Iraq in one of their fiercest clashes since the war was declared more than a year ago, it was reported last night.

Soldiers from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders mounted what were described as "classic infantry assaults" on firing and mortar positions held by more than 100 fighters loyal to the outlawed cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, according to military sources.

At least 20 men from al-Sadr’s army were believed killed in more than three hours of fighting - the highest toll reported in any single incident involving British forces in the past 12 months.

Nine fighters were captured and three British soldiers injured, none seriously.

"It was very bloody and it was difficult to count all their dead," one source was quoted as saying. "There were bodies floating in the river."

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were drawn into the fighting when soldiers in two Land-Rovers were ambushed on Friday afternoon about 15 miles east of the city of Amara. The soldiers escaped, only to be ambushed a second time by a larger group of militia, armed with machine-guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars.

Reinforcements were summoned from the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment at a base nearby. "There was some pretty fierce hand-to-hand fighting with bayonets fixed," the source added. "There were some classic assaults on mortar positions held by the al-Sadr forces."

Official spokesman Major Ian Clooney confirmed the Mehdi army "took a pretty heavy knocking", but refused to specify tactics. "This was certainly an intense engagement," he added.

so it was either an m6 or an m-7- either way, my point still stands( excuse the pun) it was either stuck in bone,or got caught under one on the way out- incidentally, we were taught to TWIST in basic- that's probably what happened- stab, thrust, TWIST and out- but the DUMMIES are only sand, and have no internals to snag on

To the OP: Definitely leave it dull, and leave it on! I use mine as a crappy unsteady monopod sometimes just for laughs.
