I have a factory .223 rem and was thinking about convereting into an AI.
Will be used for gophers. Just looking for a little more velocity/accuracy.
Also what it cost to get this done??
thx.
You are going to need custom dies that should be in the $100.00 range, ream your current chamber, that should be in the 200.00 range. You're just about all way to a new Stevens in a 22-250. FS
All true. But if you already have rifles in 223 and 22-250, then the 223 AI is a nice bridge between them. Ballistically it's about the same as the Rem 222 Magnum. Pretty good cartridge, and fun to play with. - dan
I have had two in the past three years. Still have one, RR on the board has the other one.
40 gr Ballistic Tip at more than 3900 fps, and 75 gr Amax at 3000 fps, out of a 22" barrel...............VERY accurate, easy on brass, and less than 28 gr of powder per shot.
So it's a viable alternative. I mean instead of a .204.
A little more velocity & accuracy with more readily avaiable brass and just fireforming to boot. What twist would you guys recommened.??
Yes, brass is everywhere, and the fireforming loads are just as accurate as the formed loads. You can be out shooting targets or gophers, and not waste a single shot.
Also, 223 AI dies are standard item from LEE. Got mine from Higginson for $45.
My Stevens 200 factory barrel has 1:9 twist. Rechambered by Bill Leeper, it shoots close to half-inch three-shot groups with ammo loaded with the LEE dies.
