Anyone shot a Ruger model CR MKII compact. This is the rifle with 35" oal and
16.5" barrel. Is this a restricted weapon because of barrel length? What is the recoil like shooting a 7mm-08-.308 rifle this small? How about muzzleblast?

I own all 5 Ruger Compacts LSt.
They are great for walking, nice & light.Hope they come out with it in the 338 Federal.DAN>>>

Not rest, blast is loud but you do not notice it when shooting at game. The 243& 223 are still in the shipping cartons not even looked at yet.So far I really like the 260.Will mount a couple Leupolds on the 223 & 243 over the winter.DAN>>>

It's non-restricted.

Recoil is a product of powder charge, projectile weight and firearm weight. It will be somewhat more than in a normal sporter weight arm (say 22" or 24" barrel), but the difference won't be that bad in that particular rifle, especially in the 7-80.

I looked at buying one previously, but ended up with a Remington Mountain Rifle simply out of circumstance.

Muzzle blast does increase as barrel length decreases. My 18.5" Marlin Guide Gun barks significantly louder than my friend's long barreled Browning single shot.

If you specifically want a very compact rifle, give it a try. If not, a rifle with a more conventional barrel length in the 20-24" range will offer a little less muzzle blast.

FWIW there have been tests that show that in chamberings other than really overbore magnums, shorter barrel lengths only produce insignificant decreases in muzzle velocity.

Have fun!

Dan have you run that .260 over a chronograph? I'm thinking about one as a sheep rifle.

Also, anybody know if a standard after-market Mark II stock will fit? The one thing I can't figure out about Ruger is why they don't offer the compact with an ultra-light synthetic stock - that laminated one's gotta be heavy.

Dizzy Dan, check the ruger web site The are listing the 338 Federal and the 358 Win for 2007.
I have been thinking about one of these myself.

Yes but I think they are the Frontiers.:( DAN>>>

I actually like the look of the "medium weight" barrels on the frontier rifles. I'd like one in 308, Stainless. :D

I'd go for a conventional scope set up though.

The quarter rib is screwed on and therefore removable I believe. Also the scope mounts remain in the conventional location on the receiver. But this location was not recommended by Ruger with the heavier kicking frontiers like the 325WSM (when it was available).

So if the 338 Fed or 358Win are only being chambered in the frontier, then one could consider the option of losing the "scout" configuration.

I'm sure this is a totally stupid question, but I'm new so go easy on me, eh! ;)

What is the difference between the Ruger Compact and the Ruger Frontier?? OAL, Barrel Length and Weight are all the same... What am I missing?

Thanks guys!

I own a ruger compact in .308. It shoots quite accuratley with mild recoil. The only downside i find is that it doesnt feel quite right when shouldering it. A great gun though that i use as my primary hunting rig. Oh yeah, the muzzle blast is definitely there with a 2 foot fireball. I'm gonna try some faster burning powders and see if this helps at all.
