So I came across a dealer with bulgarian 7.62x39 surplus. Comes in a crate of 1320 rounds, listed at the same price as PRC surplus in 1440 round crates. As its the same money for less ammo. It has me wondering... is it any better?

Probably not going to be any better. I've found Chinese 7.62x39 to be some of the best surplus available in this caliber. Also, I've only seen Romanian ammo in 1320 round crates, are you sure it's Bulgarian? I've never seen Bulgarian surplus in 7.62x39 for sale, just in x54r.

If it's Romanian, it'll be okay. I've fired two crates of it, one crate was pretty bad (inconsistently loaded to the point I got malfunctions with seven different rifles, but keep in mind I'm pretty sure this was an isolated thing.) and the other one was fine but not anything special. If you want my advice, go for the Chinese. It shouldn't be lacquer coated, either, so you'll save yourself from buildup in your chamber, too.

So do I. I really like observing the differences.

Apparently the Bulgarians make fantastic AK's, interested to see how their ammo holds up.
