Anyone Swapping Scopes Between Rifles

So, my collection of long range toys is getting larger by the day, I've got a couple NF's, a 6500 for my "closer range" 223, etc. I'm now in the situation where I need 1-2 more scopes.

I usually only bring 2-3 rifles to the range and am starting to think about getting some of those quick detach mounts like the NF Unimount or the Leupold ones.

I could mount these on my non-BR rifle's (308, 223, 300WM, etc) we'll call them....this would be plinking at the range, shooting at the "chicken", "ram", etc metal targets we've got. Would leave permanent mounts on my 6.5, 6mm BR, etc.

Figure it would be cheaper to buy a couple $300 quick detach mounts so I can swap a $2k NF between a couple rifles.

Thoughts?

its doable, quality mounts and a system ,ie zero on 1 rifle, 10 clicks up 12 left on the 2nd rifle then reverse to swap back or what ever it works out to be. should keep you within an MOA (depending on distanc shot) for each swap.. i thought about it but decided to just buy another scope as the 2 rifles dont run high end glass, so it was cheaper for a scope haha, if u dont mind having to fine tune ur zero after swaping then its no big deal

Funny you should post this now, that's exactly what I'm trying to do. I'd like to swap between a lower power Leupold Mk4 and a higher power NF. MR T at Mystic precision recommended using the Burris Z rings with the inserts. I didn't really want to go that route as the cross slot screw is just a slotted design but Mr T says he does it all the time with good results as long as you use a well fitting flat screwdriver. I only intend on swapping out 2-3 times a year so I'm going to try this before I go the the more costly rings. I am however going to try a 1 piece base with multi slots to allow for more lattitude with the scope placement, for and aft.

did it once, now have many NF and others, hated rezeroing and the qd threads do wear over time. It is doable.

I have been looking at Quick release mounts from Dlask Arms. I don't think that they will be of the high quality you are looking for if you are running NF scopes.

I used the lupy qd mounts to swap back and forth 3 scopes with 4 guns for a while with good results I still set up a spare for a gun when Im going a long way from home.If you count the clicks and set up a list you can keep them returning to about 3/4'' at a hundred yards.btw all the guns are the same action

Pig boots, did you lap the rings or insert any paper liners in the rings? Have you ever had any problems with scratching the scope tubes from switching back and forth?

no i leave the rings on the scopes I did have a problem with one of the front bases not lineing up with the other setups i had to ream out the screw holes a bit to put the base a few thou foward.

I have QD mounts on most of my serious hunting guns, and always take two scopes, both sighted-in, on any trips. It's good knowing that if a scope is broken or just malfunctions I can easily and quickly replace it and keep hunting. I've never had it happen, but still...when your eyes are as bad as mine have gotten lately, you don't want to be forced to fall back on iron sights.

All the typical QD systems (Leupold, Burris, etc.) seem to return to within 1MOA of zero when detached and replaced...good enough for the vast majority of hunting, but not really high precision shooting. I don't do the switch often enough to be able to comment on wear in the mounts. I know that, if I were forced to switch in the field I would not be totally confident in my zero without checking it by shooting.

The Blaser system is the only one I've tried that actually returns to the exact zero, every time. I know this is true because, being obsessive, I still check it each time! This is a fantastic system, definitely the best I've ever tried by a huge margin, but it is limited to Blaser firearms, and the mounts run close to $500 per set.
