Good friend (passed away recently RIP) used to buy bulk reptile terrarium crushed walnut and swore by it as a cheap source of tumbler media.

He gave my uncle a bag of it and we tried it out for a while (still in the tumbler actually). It does work good for polishing the brass but we found that it kind of stuck to the inside of the casings and you had to tap and brush them all out before resizing, etc.

Before we toss the stuff, is there anything we could put into the bare walnut to make it not stick to the casings and be more effective?

i was in a few pet stores yesterday in my area.......not a one had this crushed walnut media...
can any one give me an exact address to a store in the gta that carries it?

et stores don't call it walnut media, they call it reptile bedding. Start by asking for that, then look at it, and if it is made of walnut, you ar ein business..

thats funny....as the first store i walked into i asked for the walnut media:eek:...then when i got the dumb look from the girl,i realized that she did not have a clue..
so i then asked for the lizard bedding ...
but like i said no stores in my area sell it..maybe i should try one of the huge mall pet stores in the am

Ok Foggy. Petsmart has it as bird cage litter. It looks a lot like this.

Oh wait. It looks EXACTLY like that :D

There has got to be a Petsmart near you somewhere.

It's biggest advantage is the price. Same thing in a gun shop costs far more. Gun shop walnut shells will get stuck in the cases too.
"...lizard bedding..." AKA small pet bedding. You'll likely find it in Walmart, but one of the large pet supply places will have it.

I use the same stuff as blacksmithden (HI DENNIS!). About 1/2 or less the price of RCBS/Lyman etc media. It's crushed a little finer, easier to dump out of .223 cases that's for sure. Does a nice job on cleaning, without anything added. Can't speak to durability yet, haven't been using it long enough. Doesn't turn to powder like corn based pet media does, stay away from corn based.

I buy crushed walnut and crushed corn cob by the 20 litre pail from a local sand blaster.
A shot of lyman turbo brite and it works just as good as the gun store stuff.

I buy crushed walnut from a local industrial supply company, it works great, never sticks to the casing inside or out and I get 50 lbs. for about $15.00 bucks. Add a little perk polish if you want really shiny casings and there you are, cheap and works great

I use petstore walnut and corncob and have had great results over the years.

The only thing I dislike about both is that they generate quite a bit of dust inside the tumbler and when I am sifting/sorting the brass.

I guess shooters are cheap, I know a person who saved their ground corncob and walnut after it was loosing its ability to clean well and he would use it on the icy walks during the winter as a traction aid. :)

I use crushed walnut a.k.a. bird bedding that I get at the local pet store. I throw 2 or 3 USED dryer sheets in with every load of cases. Keeps the dust to a minimum and keeps the media clean longer.

Do they have their own name for the crushed walnut,
or does it go by another name?
dont want to get dumb looks like at pet stores
if you ask for something other than bird bedding.
