I was ordering a few parts from Sksman for my sks and I came across a Mag called the John Mason SKS Steel Detachable 5 RD Magazine. It looked alot better than the stock one so I ordered it too, anyway just wondering if anyone had tried this one and if there are any feeding issues.

Looks are deceiving...

Well looks are not everything.
The standard SKS magazine was designed to take anything thrown at it. That ancient looking heavy metal pan can take the brunt of a guy hitting the dirt, rifle first, without bending. It is one-piece so there are no seams to let water, mud and dirt in.
And you can feed it ten rounds with a stripper clip (in the original pre-C68-stupidity condition) in less time it would take you to dump the empty mag and clip another one in.
Another plus:when you have ammo in it and want to empty it to make the firearm safe, just unlatch it and the rounds will fall free in your hand. No need to get them out of a magazine one at a time.
One or two pulls on the charging handle with the pan still swung down to make sure the chamber is cleared and your firearm is safe. If you want to put it down on the table in the "action opened" state, just latch the pan, pull the charging handle and the hold-open device will catch the carrier.
I like that no-nonsense little carbine. Why want to improve what is already foolproof?

SKS mags

I have owned 2 duckbill mags and neither of them worked reliably. Most people seem to have the same experience. I would avoid them.

I bought a couple exactally like that a few years ago. They were crap. wouldn't push the last round hold open. Can't take the mag out on a closed bolt.

Avoid them.

Just came in the mail today, I thought that it was detachable but its not, the only reason I bought it was to be able to remove the magazine, I guess its going on the EE, I also bought a 1" rubber recoil pad stock extender but I don't like the looks of it either. On a different note I'm happy with the recoil buffer.

You know what, since youve already bought it..........

You might as well try it out at least before getting rid of it....who knows, you may just be one of hte lucky few and have it work flawlessly for you.

I had one.. It wouldn't hold the bolt carrier open after all the rounds were depleted and would sometimes jam the entire bolt assembly if improperly seated. It did however look better than the stock mag.

I've got a 30/5 rounder, and have had a lot of problems with it. The follower seems to be the real issue, it gets canted forward and the rounds feed into the flat surface below the barrel. I modified the follower, and it seems to feed dummy rounds beautifully now, but we'll see how it performs out on the range. Other than the look cool factor, really nothing comes close to the original mag for performance.
