One of my dads friends has quite a bit of property on hamilton mountain. He says he shoots coyotes all the time at a 100 yards with a 22lr. Chest shot. That they drop right away.

He's a credible person I've know him since I was a kid. He doesn't lie or exagerate . I've never heard anyone using 22lr for coyotes and performing well. Anyone have similar experience?

With proper shot placement, it works, but you have zero room for error, and you can still expect the occasional lost coyote. Not ideal, but it will work.

I've killed dozens with a .22LR and .22 WMR and had substantially better success with the WMR and a 40gr JHP load.

If you can get one to stand broadside at 100 yards or closer a .22 LR in the chest will do the job. It would not be my choice for hunting coyotes though. The coyotes I have hunted never stood around if they saw you stop your truck... The majority were shot over 200 yards... that was back in Alberta around Calgary and east of Calgary 45 miles. in the late 60's and through the 70's.

22lr works, but there’s far better options. Only time I use a 22 on coyotes is if they’re a target of opportunity and all I have with is a 22. Same with my 17hmr. Ya it kills them but not much room for error. If I’m heading out to actually shoot coyotes I always use a centerfire of some kind.

As much as I dislike coyotes I still like to give them a quick death rather than a botched shot where they suffer.

I think he uses it because he close to the city. For safety reasons. Thanks. Never underestimate the little 22lr.

It’s quite interesting people think a 22lr is “safe” or “safer” than some center fire rifles. A 22 lr will ricochet a long, very long ways. A friend is a beef processor and the number of .22 bullets he finds in beef sides, as he put it, is amazing. There are many bullets designed to explode on impact with anything that would be a better choice and safer than a .22lr. I know it’s not the reason for the post but sometimes folks, especially us older ones, need an education. Lol.

Shoot straight.

Hamilton mountain, it is more likely a noise issue due to all the close houses and silly people that buy outside town with no understanding of rural life.

Very much a "can" vs. "should" question. Other than 17M2, there probably ISN'T a caliber more poorly-suited to coyote hunting than 22LR. I wouldn't even shoot a groundhog with one and believe me, I have plenty of opportunities to do that.

As has been stated already, short answer
- yes. But I am also certain that if Bella Twin had a choice between a 30/30 or .303 and her .22 she would have grabbed the bigger rifle!!

I agree there’s better options for coyotes. I shoot groundhogs all the time inside 100 yards with velocitors. So far none have got away. I think distance, accuracy and velocity choice are the factors you want to evaluate if using the 22LR.

I've seen groundhog's thumped with 22WMR, 17HMR, 17 Hornet, 222, 223, 243, 270, 20 and 12ga. I've actually shot them with everything on that list except222/270, but I've seen that done too. At the risk of offending non-hunters or sneaky lurking Liberals...I'll NOT expand on this...but will say that for me, nothing less than a 22WMR for groundhogs.

Certainly nothing LESS than that for something likely to be further out, and even bigger. (=coyotes)

CAN it work? Right shooter/ability/load/distance=sure. My 2006, 4cyl. car can probably go 100mph too-doesn't make it a great idea. lol

I killed a decent size lynx with one at 50yds using winchester copper plated hollow points, standard velocity ammo. dropping it in its tracks with one shot in the heart/lung area. in fact it was a complete pass through and next time i will use all lead ammo for better expansion. i dont know why people think 22lr is incapable of killing. Im from Uruguay and they use it for wild boar and many other types of large bodied game. in south america its one of the more widely used hunting cartridges and they use it for capybara, nutria, wildboar, and even pampas deer. are there better options? sure. but if .22lr is all you have it will kill. i dont see why a coyote wouldnt die quickly within 125yds with a well placed shot. they arent bullet proof.

theres a video on youtube of a guy shooting ballistic gel with a .22lr at 300yds and he got almost 12 inches of penetration, the downside was almost no expansion and of course the rainbow like trajectory. as long as you know the limits of .22lr and play within them you will be fine. 125yds is probably max distance for most game. longest shot i ever made was on a hare at 125ys. held my sights over the ears and hit him in the chest.
