Anyone try a 22 lr on coyotes

If the average urban dweller ever saw what coyotes do to chickens, turkeys, sheep & lambs, calves and yes, even household pets, then they would understand that when a farm boy or most rural people see a coyote, they shoot it with whatever gun they have access to at the time.

I've seen it a few times. Got a call from a farmer who's land I hunt groundhogs on (and shoot barn pigeons) as he'd lost a newborn calf the night before and found coyote tracks all over the scene of the crime. I new the farm well, so also knew I could manage setting-up in the dark the next morning. Who knew cows weren't keen on the sound coming from a caller. (FoxPro) Well, I clearly didn't. lol

Anyhow, that was a bust. Funny part was, cows being cows...they moved TOWARDS the sound that was clearly upsetting them.

Must be in their genes.
- Cows will inquire about any unusual noise/sound

As a kid, I had one of those matraca to go help fetch the cows... Was it a good idea to send a 7yo in the field, well, those were different times I guess. All I know is I had a blast going down the cow path on my BMX to get them...

This thread reminds me of a time when I killed a fox after I ran out of ammo.

Yes, I was out of ammo.

I was on the way home from Pheasant hunting when we had the farm and I was out of shells. My dog kicked up a fox on the way and looked at me wondering why I wasn't shooting.

He got tired of my procrastination and proceeded to attack the fox.

During the skirmish my dog busted the lower spine so the fox could not walk, but he could still bite. When my dog let go to get a better bite on, the fox bit him on the jaw and they got their jaws locked with each biting the others jaw.

All I could do was smash the fox over the back with my shotgun to protect my dog.

Killed the fox and busted the stock on my gun.

Makes for a good story though, but yes if I had a 22, I would have just shot the darn thing.

Not to be that guy but...

raccoons are not rodents.

Might not be a rodent, but there are places in the world (NZ IME) where deer are referred to as rats with antlers, and Canada Goose are rats with wings. Let's just say they're a "varmint" which covers a broad spectrum. BTW, I'm on the way out the door to help a friend with some gophers... Her text inviting me to the farm said "we have varmints."

Hee hee...reminds me of something someone told me once which gave me a chuckle, that squirrels were really rats with cosmetic enhancements. I think it was in the context of squirrel pest control.

But is the squirrel a pest? I better ask my kids who clearly have more animal kingdom knowledge than I...lol...

One man's pest is another man's varmint. lol I have no issues with squirrels, but they're not breaking into my house and having babies in the attic either. I've personally had more negative experiences with raccoons that positive ones, but I've also never had a need to dispatch one. I have friends who look at squirrels and see a nice dinner option. I've yet to try eating one.

Well .22LRGUY, whatever you do with a handle like urs dont ask "Whats an appropriate round for squirrel hunting?" Yes like you I have a sense of humour. I do agree with you on the .22 LR not being the appropriate round for hunting them. But I know they will kill them as Hoytcannon has mentioned. He also stipulated conditions for his hunting situation and obviously has the restraint to not make unethical shots which is part of being a skilled bowhunter.
