Anyone try Pressure Trace????

The pressure srtain guages are pretty cool.

But they are $$$ and not something that every reloader needs. I'd say less than .05% of reloaders need one.

But hey, if you got the cash to spend on it, go nuts!:)

Time to reactive an old thread.
So, does anyone have any real experience with this product? It sounds quite interesting, does it live up to it's billing?

In the meantime, before I get one of these things, maybe I will use a chrono for load development. A few quick questions for the more experienced guys.
I am going to be loading for the Russian 14.5 x 114mm Anti Tank round.
A number of us with big boomers have been searching in vain for ammo, but there is none to be had. So we make our own.

First, cases. Can't find empty cases, so I will make some from steel on a lathe. Once having turned the outside to correct dimensions, I will drill into the mouth and down towards the base. As the inner dimensions are parallel, not tapered like the external, it will have very thick walls at the base, so GREATLY reduced volume. This is actually a good thing, as modern powders are more efficient than WW2 vintage powder. Having a huge case partially filled with slow burning powder is dangerous, and can lead to Secondary Explosion Effect, so reducing the internal capacity is good.

Second, powder. I have no idea what powder was used back in 1942 in Russia. I will be using WC870 , WC872 , H870 or similar.

Third, primers. Again, no idea what was used 60 years ago. I will be using CCI 35 primers, as found in 50BMG rounds.

Fourth, bullets. The original round used a 1000 Gr bullet. I cannot simply buy one from Speer or Nosler, so I make my own brass lathe turned ones.

SO, the question is........
Keeping in mind that all four components have changed, I dont have any manuals to follow, and the only info I have is that the original round fired a 1000 Gr. bullet at about 3300 fps.

IF MY FIRST ATTEMPT IS FAIRLY CLOSE TO 3300 FPS, AM I SAFE? APPROXIAMATELY WHAT CHAMBER PRESSURE AM I RUNNING?

I look forward to all replies.

Get a copy of QuickLoad from Neco, and maybe Quickdesign to feed in your 'custom' round. It's been working for me with some odd powder/case/bullet combos that are not in load books.

WHAT! No replies? Doesn't anyone out there with a chrono want to offer their expert advice?

Acrashb, I might yet try one of the computer based things. I think RCBS has Load from a Disc one also.

tootall, you sound like one of the few loaders that could make good use of the strain guages.

But since you seem to have the knowledge to construct your own cases and bullets, you probably have the knowledge to make an educated guess on whether you are within safe pressure parameters.;)

I had LFAD (Load From a Disk). Useless - it won't do compressed loads, it won't do unusually fast powders (e.g., blue dot in a .308), it won't do pistol barrels, etc. Basically, it can't do anything out of the ordinary, and you might as well just use load data from Sierra, Hogdon, etc.

Quickload has been within a few FPS of chrono'd measurement on every load I've tried to date. Only limit is that some of the newer powders - like Titegroup - are not included in the database yet.

Tootall. Don't use steel for your cases. With that big chunk of steel it will never seal the chamber, I would expect a lot of gass coming at you.

Acrashb, thanks for the tip about LFAD. Good to know.

Farmnut, remember that the case mouth with still be very thin and flexible. Another guy on this site, Wyldr, has being doing just what I described.
