Anyone use 7 1/2 shot for steel matches?

I have used 7 1/2 in the past but wondering what shot most of you multigunners use for shooting steel with your 12 gauge shotguns? I feel I should use #4 for the steel so as to not hit it twice. Have I just got lucky in the past or is 7 1/2 adequate?

Started using #7.5 and had some problems with steel
I use #6 all the time now.

The right choke can be more important than the shot size.

I bring #4s now but never used them yet!

Yes I noticed that last time I took my 870 out with a modified choke. No issues with steel even using 7.5 but I am bringing my 590 which doesn't have a choke so I think I will have to bring some #6/#4

I really hadn't thought about doing that, until you mentioned it....thanks for the idea!

Duh!!!! Sorry everyone!

I have been using 7 1/2 out of my 590A1 (stock no choke) for a couple three gun shoots and have not had any ammo/gun related issues against steel targets.

That's been my experience as well but I am uncomfortable every time thinking the steel won't go down. lol

Thanks alot chris. My mossy has no choke either and all ive got is 7.5.

Ahhhhh sly don't worry see above. I am using 6 and 4 though. Laugh2

6s shouldn't require as much precision as 7.5s since steel will require fewer pellets....if you have chokes, you wont have a problem with steel, but you might need a tighter choke than with 6s

Virtually every Cowboy Action shooter in North America shoots either #7 1/2 or 8 shot. The max mandated by SASS is #4 shot, but you rarely need it, unless the match director is a prick.

Well today proved that unless you have some sort of choke the Texas Star requires more than 7 1/2 unless you want to shoot a few more times at the same plate. :)

I've had trouble with 7.5's not knocking down the occasional steel so I moved to 4s. They've worked perfect. The trouble with the steel is they can be inconsistent in the force needed to drop them. I know they are supposed to all work the same but in set-up, sometimes they end up on a bit of a slope or they haven't been set quite right and need more of a hit to drop.
