Anyone use a '92 Trapper for hunting?

I haven't hunted with a trapper but I wouldn't hesitate to do so..... depending on the game .357mag,.44mag,.45colt,30-30, .454 casull or 45-70 would all get the job done.

I shoot a couple a deers with my Trapper 357 and 6 with my Trapper 44 mag.... within their limit they are stumper... JP.

My Marlin 1894s is my go to stalking gun. Not much beats a 16" .44Mag in the thick stuff. I get just under 1700fps with 240gr XTP's.

Thanks guys, that's what I wanted to hear. Actual experience using the 16" Trapper and not the hypothetical. What's the recoil like with the 44 magnum in a 16" barrel?

Not that much very pleasant gun to shoot even with full trottle load, but a big ball of fire in front... JP.

How does your 1894 compare to a Marlin '95 GG in .45/70? I believe the shortest barrel for a GG is 20". Anyone can comment - I'm looking for a short lever with more firepower. Thanks.

Marlin Guide is an 18.5" barrel. Rossi Puma '92 clones chamber a .454 Casull. That's the most horsepower you're gonna get in a trapper length rifle with an action designed around a pistol cartridge.
.44 mag with heavy-weight hardcast at full throttle will put down any deer or black bear within 75 yards real quick.
Winchester (miroku japan) is currently producing real nice '92s
Rossi-Puma currently offers 16" barreled '92s
Marlin has done small runs of 16.25" barrelled 1895 and 1894's...but they are nearly unobtanium in Canada. I waited nearly three years to get my 1894P. Importing from the US is an option.
I'm currently having a 1894SS built with a 16" barrel, custom from a licensed manufacturer is another option. I have carried my 1894P the last three years in the mountains when backpacking, but for hunting there are better choices for me in my safe.

Nice to see you asking questions instead of just assuming this thread around. ;) So hopefully what we have learned here today is that factory short barreled levers (take-downs included) indeed are non-restricted and you can use them to hunt with if you wish.

I have a Marlin 1894 SS .44Mag with the longer 20" tube. Fun little gun for plinking but I haven't seriously hunted with it yet. The .45-70 is in a whole 'nuther world when it comes to handloads. That old cartridge when loaded with 550gr hard cast bullets has put the brakes on Hippopotamus & Cape Buffalo. Whole different league than the .44/.30-30 Trapper models. But inside 100 yards, a moose would soon be hanging in the cooler if a Trapper was in yer mitts ;)

I believe the shortest barrel for a GG is 20".
My 1895G .45-70 was an early model ported GG and if I remember correctly, the barrels were +-18". Very handy for close in on heavy game and I packed mine for chasing grizzly with some hard cast loads I worked up.

Just out of curiosity, Winchester makes a Model 1892 Trapper with a 16" barrel. It lists the calibers as .357, .44, 44-40 and .45 Colt.

I shoot a Savage 99 in .243, .30/.30 Winchester carbine and a .303 Winchester '95 (the last is a pretty old gun though).

fugawi,

Your Winchester 95 in 303 Br might well be perfect for what you are after. It has been rebarrled, right, so has no great collector value. How about having another 303 Br barrel installed, cut and crowned at 18 inches? That would be legal, non-restricted, and would have considerably more power than any of the others you are considering.

Surplus 303 barrels with like-new bores are everywhere and cheap, the 95 is a very strong action, and the 303 with 200-215 gr bullets is nothing to laugh at.

And, at any time, you could re-install the barrel currently on your rifle if you wanted to.

I had a Marlin 1895 GG and sold it. It was a ported gun and I found the recoil and blast too punishing to really justify carrying it for deer. I have few firearm regrets, but one was not buying an 1894P when they were available. My 1894s feels the same but has a microgroove barrel. I'm working up a load to shoot hard cast 300gr WFN. I'm hoping for 1500 fps. It's a keeper for sure.
