I am thinking about getting a $75 dollar SKS from marstar, I know it is a fun gun to fool around with, but with the proper ammo does or has anyone used it to hunt? I am torn between a CZ 527 carbine or an SKS. In a perfect world I would get both, but who can beat the SKS for the price. So, feedback? is it a half decent hunting rifle in thick brush?

Thanks for the input.

I took my Russian SKS out for the first time today and fired off a few hundred rounds, I was hitting 591mL bottles fairly well between 20y-100y. I wouldn't hesitate to take it to the bush with me. Anything beyond the 100y mark would be pushing it with the iron sights.

I havnt used my for hunting yet but one of my hunting buddies uses one and has great success! Just make sure you practice with it first and are able to hit what you aim at.

If you do a lot of practice with surplus ammo and then switch to a modern soft point load for hunting, just remember to adjust your sights for the different ammo. When I switched from surplus to sp my poi at 50 yards was significantly different from the surplus.

lol me too, when my friend and I shoot we are continually saying that our aim is getting better than our eye sight will allow. I find spraying all the targets blaze orange works well lol.

The CZ 527 will put 5 shots through a dime at 100 yards, but its 800 bucks plus. The SKS is one or two hundred bucks but shoots an 8 inch group at 100 yards. One is an economy rifle, one is not. Either rifle, its still a close range bullet and has rapid loss of power and energy after 150 yards. The bullet is good for nothing bigger than deer, shoots well for a small lady, junior, or man who is effeminate. The SKS is an ok rifle to have under the seat in your truck or quick to shot off the quad, but after that, most adult males should have no problems shooting something bigger . The SKS is awesome for cheap gravel pit fun, but don't confuse it with a good hunting rifle.

The $75 Chinese SKS from Marstar is $200 after shipping.
You should buy yourself an authentic Russian SKS for the same price.

You can hunt with an SKS. But you need to buy hunting ammo which cost about one dollar per shot.

The cheap military ammo is not allowed for hunting.

So your going to mark deer with a orange paintball first?lol

well call me effeminate, but when I go through 3 or 4 hundred rounds I dont want to be out of pocket 3 or 4 hundred bucks lol 22,s get old after a while and I want something with a bit more fire power that is not going to break the bank.

lol I didnt say i could hit them... I just said I wanted to try, coming from shooting bows since the age of 5 its a major change shooting guns, a really fun change, but an abrupt one at that.

8" at 100 yards? I can do better then that with my 10/22 and almost do that with my shotgun and 1oz slugs...

I can hit a 12" plate at 300 yards with my SKS and surplus ammo. 123gr hunting ammo and some practice you should be able to drop a deer out to 200 yards with ease

90% of SKS owners seem to be the shoot from the hip type I guess. Better ammo = better accuracy, even upgrading to the cheap MFS gives you a nice improvement over the old surplus and if you add a set a tech sights you can watch your groups get cut in half
