Anyone used a M14 for 3 gun

I believe it was me who originally brought the fact that they worked in the M14 to light, and it sparked a healthy debate. I never heard either way if they were gtg, and I sold my AIA so the only mag I have now is the one I modified with an unnecessary square hole, so it is disassembled and useless now. :(

Sounds like your matches are, well... more structured than ours. With the Wild Rose Action Shooters you shoot what you bring...

What rules / auspice do you guys shoot "under"...?

Rules usually mirror something like this.

"Trooper" is one class/div. that isn't seen at all 3-gun matches, but it does lend another aspect to the whole game...

I've done it, but...

...However it seems that almost everyone uses an AR .Now why should I spend all that money when I have a perfectly good M14. I want to do it but the cheap way and not have to buy an AR. Besides the money for an AR will buy lots of ammo for a gun I already own.
So then a few questions. 1) has anyone used their m14 at a 3 gun shoot 2)are you at a disadvantage using an M14 3)If the M14 works, are their any extra things I need to go with it..mags, red dot...

In Canada, by law, your M-14 magazine cannot hold more than 5 rounds.

On the other hand, if the rifle you'd use will accept the LAR-15 magazine - whether Remington 7615, a semi-automatic-only version of an AR-15, AR-180B, T97, or Robarm XCR - you can have 10 rounds in each magazine. Most people choose this option.

You cannot be competitive with an M-14.

3 gun & M14s

I use my chopped M14 for the 3 guns I go to and plan to keep doing so. I realize that the AR platform swaps mags faster and holds a better sight picture strictly due to recoil and weight and the mech tech carbines are even faster and lighter, but I do like the satisfaction of using a .308 as well as my bone stock .45. Ultimately, I am not interested in gathering the piece of paper saying "best in class" for this day. To me, it is about shooting what I want, perhaps not as well as I once did, perhaps not as well as everyone else does, but everyone has their own reasons for doing what they do and as long as satifaction is acheived.............the day is a success.

HEY YOU... said it perfectly,
"Ultimately, I am not interested in gathering the piece of paper saying "best in class" for this day. To me, it is about shooting what I want, perhaps not as well as I once did, perhaps not as well as everyone else does, but ... as long as satifaction is acheived.............the day is a success."

Shoot whatever you want.
better yet, shoot what ever you would in a FOR REAL situation.

After all, this sport we engage in used to called PRACTICAL shooting ...
with a capital "P".

For me, these matches are NOT about paper or trophies.
BTDT,
got the T shirt.
Literally.
Today, these matches for me are about testing my equipment and my self, aka ... practical practice.

In fact , for me, a match is a great place to sight in my guns and test out new changes ... because I may have not had time to get to the range before.

I once shot the Canadian IPSC Championships with a 3.5" barreled .45 ACP MAJOR Detonics Combat Master, with an SOB holster, under a mountain parka,
and took great pleasure in the number of race gun shooter I beat, rather than where I placed over all.

And I had more personal satisfaction that year, than I did the next year, when I shot it with a FULL HOUSE Race gun myself.
