Anyone using a 1701P adjustable hammer in their Crosman 2240?

Hi: I am trying to get another 50-75 fps using CP 14.3 gr pellets in my 7-3/4" barrel 2240. I have a modded valve and a .170 transfer port,RVA with stock hammer spring and a 1701P trigger group.
From what I have been reading..the stock barrelled 2240 'wastes' a lot of Co2 by opening the valve too much,so I would like to try an adjustable 1701P hammer that has the threaded striker in the end to shorten the stroke,so as to not open the valve as much....not sure if this will get me some more speed?...it's imperative that I use the shorter barrel though.Any tips on getting some more speed from the short barrel 2240? Thanks,Huck50

The reason the 2240 wastes CO2 is because the pellet has already left the barrel before the valve closes. (Too long of a dwell). Hammer strike won't help speed, but can reduce the amount of wasted CO2. Opening up the ports may help (but I doubt it). Best way would be to use HPA instead of CO2 and just increase the pressure. Extensive mods would need to be performed to go to HPA or look-up the HiPac (easiest way).

I thought that maybe if the hammer striker was extended there would not be as much momentum when hitting the valve stem, thus not opening as far, possibly closing faster? Thanks,Huck50

You're not wrong in your thinking. By the valve not opening as far it will close sooner, thus saving CO2. It will not increase velocity but save CO2. If you cut down the strike too much though, your velocity will drop.

Thanks...I have a hammer and striker on it's way. I am hoping to extend the hammer length enough and also being able to adjust hammer spring tension via a hammer soring tensioner(RVA),I hope to open the valve just enough and close at the right time to give me the proper anount of Co2 for an extra few f/s...I have a Chrony and lots of time. It is imperative that I keep the short barrel. Huck
