Anyone using a Target Cam or baby monitor?

Just wondering if anyone is using a target cam to see there hits? I'm not willing to spend $1000-$3000 or more for a spotting scope. Seems abit pricey but with optics you get what you pay for. So how about a taget cam? You can zoom pan tilt and see every shot you make at any distance. For long distance shooting I'm guessing a target cam would be a better choice. I've seen complete kits for $475 up to $1200. Also the range seems to be over 2km for the higher end models.
This has got me thinking about baby monitors. I've seen 500 foot range wireless monitors. The screens are small though. However the cost is about $250-$450.
The target cam kits can use lcd monitors of any size so you can see your shots easier.
Anyway what are your thoughts?
I have a newborn so I was thinking I could use the cam for both uses.
 
I've been searching a little into it online to see if anything can be easily pieced together for a low price, so far my thought is toward FPV rc equipment as it certainly has the range.
The baby monitor is probably a great cost solution but all I could find for longest range is 900ft and 7" screen. Maybe they can go further than that distance though as there may be an image quality factor,walls and home interference, in their range rating, might be better out in the open?. Thing is if it goes no further than 900ft, with a good rifle scope you should be able to see the holes in the target at 900ft anyway.

One thing I was wondering is if it could be done with 2 smart phones? I would imagine yes so long as the one near the target is protected, but I don't have one and never even used one.

This is another thing I'm looking into, at 3000mW and 1.2ghz it should reach much further than the basic rating of 1500ft, they do say with other antennas it'll go further but might not need it from what I could find so far on power needed to transmit over 1km.

Most wifi devices have a very limited range. If you're shooting 15-25yrd sure, shouldn't be an issue. If you think you're going to get signal from 200yrs out, good luck. The iphone/ipad will work if both have cell plans tied to them. Buy a cheapie $300 spotting scope.
 
Just thinking about this the other day sounds like a good idea .Thought i saw some talk about a camera set up by Gerry the mystic precision guy just the other day.Will a cheap spotting scope pick up small caliber holes at 100yds?
 
Out to 1000yds no problem. Just look for 3W wireless TX/RX on Ebay. Under $100 from Asia. They work well.

Hook up a camera with a zoom and RCA output to the Tx. RX uses a LCD monitor used in car screens. A couple of battery packs and you are golden.

The image quality is low res analog so small holes are difficult to see on small monitors but if you drop the shots into a white sheet, no problem

On AccurateShooter right now there's an article about some commercial system. I don't know anything about it, but says good to 1000 yds.

I have a put-together system, designed for 2600 yd potential, which I have used at over a mile. There's an old thread about it somewhere. Had help from a guy who designed it, I don't have the knowledge to discuss it intelligently....
 
You can get a decent spotting scope for $500-700, as opposed to the $1000-3000 you say. Why bother with this setup? These would be far supeior to a baby monitor at the 500' range you are talking about.

Like I said I have a newborn and will need a baby monitor. A spotting scope will not help me with a baby. If I have to send money on a scope and baby monitor, why not invest in a good cam system and be able to shoot at any range? Scopes are great for short range but long distance shooting is an issue. Yes at 200yds a scope works fine but doesn't kill two birds with one stone.

Don't most people look for an excuse to buy stuff? Ie- we bought this baby monitor, but honey, I need a spotting scope...
 
Don't know squat about camera tech etc but I noticed that Princess Auto had a pile of different security cameras and related stuff in the surplus section. Even running a wire might not be a huge deal if you are shooting the same place regularly.
