Anyone using LeverEvolution in 7.62x39

External Ballistics (after the bang) may be similar but Internal Ballistics (before the bang) are different. The 7.62X 39 cartridge case is short and fat and 30-30 is long and slender. 30-30 uses slow burning powder and 7.62 x 39 uses fast burning powder.

You could use LeverEvolution if you have no other choice but you won't have efficient powder burn and poor performance. About 30% of the powder won't even have time burn in the barrel before the bullet leaves the chamber.

What other powders do you have? And what projectile weight do you intend to use?
 
I have other powders that work well, with 123 and 150 grain bullets, but I have an 8 lb. jug of LeverEvolution I would like to put to other uses. :) Your technical explanation is quite sound. Thanks. I think I will try to find another cartridge to utilize the powder.
 
It's popular in the 6.5 Grendel, which is more or less a necked down x39

However, as you neck down to a smaller diameter on the same case size, powder choice will go to a slower burn rate. I'd look at CFE BLK for the 7.62x39
 
It's right beside H380 in burn rate, I can't find any loads with powder that slow in any bullet weights for the x39.
 
Best powder I've found for the 7.62x39 CZ527 is H4198/25-25.5gr for the standard 123-125gr bullet and H-335 /29gr for the 150gr .311 Sierra Buddy uses RE#7 in his for 123gr SP. I get better accuracy.

While I typically use either IMR or H4198 for plinking with 7.62x39, CFE BLK loaded at the end of the table (in my case 28.5 GR @ 2.190 COL) is by far the spiciest and I'd think the most suitable for hunting inside 200 yards. Given that it's a ball powder, you can cram more in (28.5 GR of CFE BLK isn't compacted but 25.5 GR of H4198 is getting close). I typically put a Hornady 123 GR SST on top of that mix. Accuracy is slightly less than the 4198 loads, but very acceptable (~2 MOA with my Ruger American Ranch) with approximately 100 FPS higher muzzle velocity.

Bonus Tip: Winchester White Box 123 GR FMJ "Target" ammo has small rifle primers. Makes the 7.62x39 so much more fun to reload when the primers are comparatively cheap and easy to find.

That's a Red Herring. The case capacity of the 30-30 is 25% greater than the 7.62X39, and the 30-30 operates at lower pressures. They're only "close ballistically" by coincidence, and using different powders.

30-30 loads with LeverEvolution (LVR) are all compressed. As Hitzy suggested, this powder is too slow. Even a compressed load with a heavy bullet in the 7.62X39 will be operating at a very low pressure and even if it does reliably ignite, it won't give MV's anywhere near as fast as you'd get in the 30-30.

I realize I'm bumping my own post, but I thought I'd give an update on this.

I got back out this past weekend and had a chance to do a bit more testing. I might have been having a bad day last time I shot the CFE-BLK loads or it could be my previous scope; but this past weekend I mounted a Viper PST 4-15 and stretched out to 200 yards:

Bottom hole at the "1R" was a ranging shot. But man, check out that group!

This is a 16" barrelled Ruger American Ranch in an MDT Chassis:

For the hell of it, I'm going to experiment a bit with the COL and loaded up a ladder of lengths from just off the lands (2.232") back to 2.190" at 0.006" increments. Curious to see what I can squeak out of this round.

MDT actually makes an AR magazine compatible chassis for the Ruger American Ranch. Was a drop in/bolt on affair.

I’ve since added the adjustable folder and some better glass.
