Just wondering if many people are using a shotgun/slug combination for deer and black bear.

I have a shotgun with a red dot sight that gives good hunting accuracy out to about 75 yards with slugs, for me.

I do several trips a year into the bush and will always have my shotgun in the car when camping, been thinking of doing a bit of hunting while out and maybe using the shotgun.

Interested if anyone else is using a shotgun for this given how cheap rifles/optics are.

The only reason thinking about the shotgun is that I don't go on a dedicated hunting trip but more of an explore of the backroads, do a bit of hiking, camping by rivers or lakes, usually not staying at a dedicated campground or rec site but just were ever I park my car.

That's all we used for deer for many years. Some still do but s lot if guys have moved over to rifled barrle shotguns .smooth bore guns can get the job done with a little practice and experiment with ammo

I’ve killed a bunch of deer with those big pumpkins. They smash thru a lot of bush and find their mark. Never killed a bear with one but I would, given the chance.
I read an article in a local paper when hunting in Pennsylvania where a 14 yr old boy killed a slammer buck with a .410 slug. That was impressive.

My buddy uses his Auto5 with slugs on occasion.
He shot (25yrds) a deer with a slug he found in an RCMP Cruiser.
2-3/4'' Imperial too no less.
The reason he was int he car was is he worked for a glass shop who did the glass and upholstery repairs in the cars.
Dog members cars are always getting chewed up by Fido.
Use what you go and give it a whirl.

I shoot slugs accurately enough out of my smooth bore Winchester 1300. Up to about 75 yards is all I've tried. I don't use an optic at all....just looking down the barrel.

My friend gets his deer every year with a remington 1100 and an old school style slug. It has a fixed mod choke and just the bead on the end of the barrel
Cheers
