Anyone Working with the Whisper cartridges?

The whisper cartridges are all subsonic, and really designed for suppressor equiped rifles. They could kill deer, but you'd get zero bullet expansion. They aren't really the best choice.......

Disagree. :bsFlag:

Within 150yds and the right bullet (and placement) a 300 Whisper will make short work of a deer.

Hell, some folks kill deer with arrows...

I don't think that it is useful to compare an arrowhead with a bullet as they create wounds through different mechanics. If one was to use the Whisper round to take deer, I would choose a fragile bullet like the 125 gr Sierra and work up a supersonic load for it.

Suputin is the real authority concerning sub-sonic ammunition and ballistics, and if I recall my discussion with him, he maintained that accuracy of sub-sonic ammo is pretty miserable with spitzers, and a long heavy bullet with parallel sides combined with a short fast twist barrel produces the best results. I have a few boxes of Lapua 200 gr sub-sonic bullets, but they are FMJ so cannot be used for hunting. However, it is interesting to see the design of these bullets compared to conventional hunting or match bullets.

I do not think that a bullet necessarily needs to expand to produce a humane kill, but if the bullet is nonexpanding it should have a hemispherical or flat nose to produce the most effective wound characteristics. In this regard there are several .30 caliber cast bullets which would prove effective. A conventional jacketed .30 caliber round nose has so much bullet shank causing drag on the barrel that there is a real chance of the bullet being stuck in the bore. Suputin recommended lubing subsoinic bullets, but you should PM him if you intend to proceed in this direction.

This website has reloadable subsonic rounds in a variety of calibers that are very accurate with regular jacketed bullets. No risks of jamming the bullet in the barrel either when the instructions are followed. I've tried these things out. I like 'em. Hell of a lot cheaper than buying a Whisper barrel too, not to mention the waiting period.
