I just purchased a new Leupold VX-II 4x12 scope and the magnification selector ring seems to be quite stiff. Is there anything I can do (ie. lube) to get it to move a bit easier?

The VX-III's I've seen seem to move a lot easier but maybe they just have better parts inside.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have the exact same problem with my Falcon Menace 4.5-18 scope. Falcon optics recommended I heat up the power ring with a hair dryer and keep turning it from end to end to spread around the grease.

Helped but not too much as I've only did it for a few min.

Take it back, it should not be like that. They have a great guarantee so take advantage.

Well, Leupold warranty service for Canada is located in Okotoks, so you could probably just get them to fix it since you're right next door.

The ring on VX-II's tends to be quite stiff.

I wouldn't be trying the hair dryer method. Don't confuse the grease used in a cheap scope with tight tolerances used in higher end optics. It may feel similar but it is NOT the same issue.

I've also noticed my VX-II is quite stiff as well. I'm hoping this will lossen up with use but i guess only time will tell.

My VX11 is also quite stiff. If its a problem email customer service to see what they say about it. Maybe sent it in for service?

Well i might try that, but i don't want to over-react yet. Besides all that, its depressing to think that i may have to send my brand new scope back, especially since it hasn't even been broken in. (with at least a few good months of use)

as said, VXII's or VXI's tend to be stiff, and dont give alot of leverage being a pretty low profile ring unlike the VXIII's which have a raised knob on the ring

I just gave them a call and apparently the cleaner that leupold uses when they assemble the scopes melts the o-ring seals. The guy I spoke with said its a common problem and just to drop it off and he'll replace them.

I live about 10-15 min away from the depot so might as well give it a try.

I'll let you know once I get the scope back from repair.

Thanks. Mine is quite stiff also. Maybe they used acetone to clean them.

You would think they would use a different type of cleaner if it melts the o- ring seals or be a bit more careful when assembling.
