Just wondering, does anyone use the AO on their scope as a make-shift rangefinder ? Are there any inherent problems with doing so (assuming that you are only using it as a rangefinder on an actual target) ? I would guess that you could "sight in" your AO at the range to determine the accuracy of the AO settings but can things like weather (extreme heat or cold) the accuracy of these settings relative to actual range ?

If I remember right, my scope is ranged to 300 yards on the AO and at the 300 yard mark it's also marked for infinity. So I'm assuming it could not tell the difference between 300 and 400 or 500; obviously your ballistics would be very different however.
Depending on what your shooting(typicallt and sort of bog game), the redicle of you scope can be used. lots of scopes are set-up that the distans between the thick posts is 30 inches @ 100 on lowest power or 15" to the crosshair basically you figure out at what power can you bracket a typical depth of chest (of animal in question) at set distances, adjust the zoom of the scope and read off the corresponding distance.
