Aperture and Ghost Ring Sights for Marlin 336

There is more to the description of a ghost ring than to say it is simply a peep sight with a large aperture. Yes the aperture is larger than is common in a peep sight, up to a quarter inch, but where the peep sight has a wide rim (sometimes very wide) the ghost ring has a very thin rim. Thus simply drilling out the aperture of a peep sight does not necessarily a ghost ring make. The ghost ring's rim, "ghosts" out of focus, then out of your vision all together as you focus on the front sight. By contrast a target shooter's peep sight has a tiny aperture in a large disk that completely blocks the view except through the tiny aperture. While not very fast it is very precise. Where as the ghost ring is precise enough for practical marksmanship, it is also very fast to pickup.

That is why in my post I said to unscrew the disc and take it out, rather than just drill the hole larger. Here is a Williams Fool Proof with the disc removed, on a Marlin.
Note that the rim is very little thicker than is a Ghost Ring. A person used to peep sights leaves both eyes open and really couldn't tell you that a ring even exhists!

On this Marlin it is stock, but I prefer a post.
Best iron sights I've ever had was on a Husqvarna, 30-06, that I bought in 1949, right after they were first exported to Canada. I put a Lyman 48 on it, which the rifle was drilled and tapped for. It had the best post I've ever had on a rifle. The part of the front sight nearest your eye, was higher on top and it was wider than the rear was. Thus, it was a pure silhouette, without any glare.
I shot a lot of game with those sights, including goats, wolves, coyotes, etc, and never once did I feel handicapped because of no scope.
It was sighted to hit on top of the post. As I said before, You don't even know the ring exhists. You just put the top of the post on what you want to hit and bang, dead, whatever.

H4831 my son's grandfather just gave him his Husqvarna Featherweight 30-06 this last Thursday for his 25th birthday.

The stock is a little rough but the blueing is perfect the rifle hasn't been shot in over 40 years and it took me about 1 hour to get it cleaned and lubed up for him.

Last year I also gave him a Husqvarna it was a 270 Win originally but my grandfather rechambered it to 270 Weatherby he then gave it to my dad and this was the rifle I shot my first deer with.

After having it for about 10 years the old guy demanded it back and gave me several other rifles to replace it then just a few months before he died @ 94 years of age 2 - 3 years ago he gave it back too me.

So now my son has 2 Husqvarna's both are over 50 years and in excellent condition.

Oh yeah so I'm not hijacking this thread to badly I have 3 XS Sights ghost ring sights fast and accurate to use.

On my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 I mount an XS Sights low Weaver backup ghost ring sight.

If one of you guys is looking for a rear xs sight I have one I am not using. It was on a 30as so the front sight that goes with it is a dovetail and not a ramp. But the rear will fit a 336 and should work with the factory front. Cost me over a hundred Canadian so if someone wants to pony up $70 including shipping its yours. Front sight dovetail sight included.
