Greetings;

I recently purchased a Marlin 1895 GBL in 45/70, primarily as a close quarters bush gun for hunting Moose Bear and Deer in thick bush;
I will also "force" ;) myself to do a little plinking at the range in the off season

It has been a few years since I shot with open sights and it showed at the range. The model I bought has the buckhorn type sights, my eyesight is not what is was and in dim light I find it hard to get a proper sight picture. Considering in my experience I see most of my targets in early or late light this is a issue for me.

I really dont want to use a scope because of the type of bush, and for ease of carry, secondly because I am a klutz and will probably knock it off centre.

So I was looking at aperture ghost ring sights which experience tells me are an easier sight to shoot, especially in dim light.

I have looked at the Skinner Tactical sight (I like the ruggedness of it)

and the XS Ghost sights

Both ship to Canada and the cost is comparable, I can install either myself without having to fork out for a gunsmith.

My question is in your experience, which is the best for my application, and are there any other sights to consider, especially Canadian made ones.

Thanks for your assistance!

Mick

I'm sure those are all good sights but I like a firesight front for hunting in those early and late hours when most of the game is seen up close.

I like the look of both sights. I have used aperture sights as a preference over open sights since day one. With my #4 Sporter I found the battle sight (very large) to be perfect for deer (50 yards and less).

With the other rifles, I used the Williams FoolProof and zeroed the sight with the insert screwed in and then changed to the largest insert for hunting.

For a front sight I prefer the ones with the fibre optic rod that give a bright red dot for a sight.

I like the protected wings on the tactical sight, but there is no mention of the aperture size or a choce of sizes. Can you get it with a BIG aperture?

The other sight offers two sizes. I like that. I wonder if it is possible to practice and zero withthe smaller one and change to the bigger one for hunting, without buggering up the zero?

Both look very well priced, too.

I like the idea of the pre-zeroed back up peep to fit on a scope base.

i have a #4 brit and just put a parker hale t.z.4\47 rear apiture which is a sniper sight and i find it a great tool and looks cool but still tinkering with it
