Apparently, according to this guy we all beat our children.

There is a clipping of a cartoon I have hanging on a wall near my computer that says a good deal for me on the too often destructive relationship we humans have with other creatures on this planet.

Drawn by American cartoonist David Wiley Miller, the cartoon depicts a forested area where hunters are creeping in on a herd of deer with a crowded metropolis of highways, high-rise buildings and smokestacks looming in the background. “Let me get this straight,” says one of the deer looking over the hunter’s heads at the concrete, metal and smoke. “It’s our herd that needs to be ‘thinned’?”

Don’t you just love that word “thinned” we humans so often choose to use when we want to pretend, for some ‘scientific reason’, we need to engage in a little bit of population management for some other creature’s own good. And it almost always means selling hunting licenses to those guys among us (and they are almost always guys) who think they are going to find their manhood by blowing away a deer or a bear or a fox or a duck or whatever else happens to be ‘in season’ out there with a gun.

The other word for ‘thinning’ is ‘culling’. There are a lot of bureaucrats in our governments’ wildlife services who like to use that one. ‘It’s time for a culling’, they’ll say, because these animals are beginning to populate too much space per square acre, their numbers are placing too heavy a demand on the available food supply or they are encroaching on the habitat of others, which more often than not means they are encroaching on us. There is rarely ever thought given to the possibility that we might be encroaching on them.

So it’s time to go “hunting,” to do a little “thinning” or “culling,” which are all soft, deceptive words we use as if, for the good of whatever herd or flock or other arrangement these creatures are living in, we are doing them a favour by putting some in their population ‘to sleep’.

But let’s stop snowing one another. What we are really talking about is killing. And I know, mom doesn’t want to put it that way to the kids when dad is going out to do a little culling today. ‘Well, kids. Dad will be back later. He’s just going out with his gun and a box full of shells to kill some mallards.’ Just doesn’t sound fuzzy enough, does it? Sounds like a guy who could come home later and cuff the kids if he’s having a bad day (possibly because he didn’t bag enough ducks) and he thinks the kids are out of line.

I took a good look at that cartoon again last week when I was learning the news about the brutal assault last week by possibly two or more people on the Happy Rolph’s Bird Sanctuary at the northeast end of St. Catharines along Lake Ontario where a number of animals, including goats and rabbits and others, were killed or wounded.

The outpouring of anger from the public over news of this mindless slaughter of animal life is heartening and very understandable, given the long history Happy Rolph’s has played in the lives of many Niagara families (including mine) with taking children there to interact with some of the other creatures we should feel so fortunate to share this planet with.

But how far will that outrage extend?

Will it extend to cormorants – a Great Lakes bird that, after decades of being brought to the brink of extinction due to PCBs, DDT and other man-made poisons discharged to these waterbodies – is being “culled” again with the blessing of our provincial government, because, allegedly, these fish-eating birds are robbing the waters of too many of the fish anglers like to catch? Ironically, this bird appeared on one of our coins about the same time the McGuinty government, a few years back, decided it was a good idea to start with the shooting and oiling of their eggs so they won’t hatch.

Will it extend to the human world’s hunting down of the last few tigers on this planet, the last few families of elephants and gorillas, the fishing of the last few blue fin tuna (now classified as “seriously endangered species”) Canada’s government would not vote to protect at a recent global conference, the sharks being callously destroyed for their fins for a soup, and one could go on and on.

Maybe other creatures on this planet would be better off if we humans had ‘culling’. Better yet, can’t we find a way of living on this planet without so much killing? If you have any information on this latest brutal crime at Happy Rolph’s, contact the Niagara Regional Police at Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 and/or the Lincoln County Humane Society at 906- 682-0767.

Apparently this guy works for this rag too. It is delivered free to my house and I have left both a reply to the article as well as a nasty voice mail with regards to his slanderous statements.

He writes for all the free delivery rags in Niagara. Here's my reply:

Mr. Draper,

It is pretty ignorant of you to imply that because a person should choose to hunt they are automatically more likely to beat their children. I hunt, I have children and never have I beat them. In fact firearms owners are the least likely people in this country to commit violent acts, look it up.

You have no understanding of biology, nor do you have any understanding of anything outside of your tunnel vision. For you it seems to be your way or no way at all, correct?

I see you have chosen to complain about a lot of things in your comment but I have yet to see you make any constructive comments or suggestions. Do you think that your actions have not impacted wildlife? There is a balance in place and people who know a lot more than you are constantly monitoring what is happening. You only see a part of the big picture and think you know what's going on, you have no clue.

It's those people you deplore, the fishers and hunters who are most active in preserving wildlife areas including but not limited to watershed rehabilitation, fish stocking programs and other such wildlife sensitive programs. Please tell us what you, personally have done beyond sitting behind your keyboard critisizing others.

Once again your statement about hunters abusing their children is completely slanderous and completely out of line. I think maybe you should rethink your statements in the future as it's people like myself who actually care about our environment and get out and do things as opposed to your pompous self who can only sling dirt at others.

With no respect at all,
Corey D

My reply:

Nope I don't hunt animals. I hunt dumb a** lefties like yourself. And I find it much more fullfilling and feel that this is one cull which will benefit the entire world.

Oh, and I agree, the real problem is not the hunters, but rather the rapidly growing cities that feed on the surrounding landscape like leaches. I think it would be much more beneficial for wildlife to burn and level the cities - like the one where you live!

********

And for those who think I only talk like this on the net, well, you have no idea how many people I pi** off face-to-face. Just ask some dumba**es at work how angry I have made them with my wise cracks.

Thanks for proving him right. Sorry, but I have no intention of asking any of your peers at the bottle depot about your work place shenanigans. Wow.

I wonder why any of you are surprised at this man's attitude. Look at where he is from, understand what little interaction with reality he likely has, and then pity him. And make sure you DO participate in the programs and elections that make a real difference.
This man is anything but elliquent; he probably signed up for "Journalism" in community college.
Keep indignation from becoming anger and use your voice intellegently so we can hold our heads high if it comes to the firing line.

Wow I guess we should pity the poor guy. Guess he never spent any time with mom and dad out harvesting thier supply of free range winter protien. Sad how small his world must be.

Just to let you know there is hope my 8 year old daughter is working on a 2 year project of relating her hunting tales in print and acrylic. She has a vague notion that some people are ignorant enough to not understand how important it is to a families spiritual and physical health to hunt and eat together and figures she can help them. ah innocence.

Don't forget the friendly use of the word "harvest". Guy at work asked me,
"what kind of deer did you harvest"? I replied, "I didn't harvest anything, but I did shoot and kill a whitetail buck.

Oh s**t really? You mean he isn't educated enough to be a journalist? Community colleges should be shut down, how dare they purport to educate! You must have a Masters from some socialist mecca at least if you want to be a journalist, everybody knows that! The guy is a douchebag but you yourself seem to have some elitist notions that aren't much better. :jerkit:

you know the guy is talking out of his ass when he starts talking about corrmarants and "the last small familiys of elephants", who now populate areas in such numbers that they are literally destroying the landscape and god forbbid killing the other animals due to there destruction of habitat.

Let him clean some cormorant poop off of a range beacon or navigation light, they nest on them, come back, regurgitate their food for their young and sh*t everywhere. Truly lovely to clean up......

Thanks Pottsy, I appreciate your unintentional effort in proving my point. But clearly I stepped on the toes of your education, and the waste of money that community college is in most proffessions. I apologize for having an opinion, and that it is informed.
The man's ability with the english language is sub-par for print, and an obvious inability to do anything resembling background research on the many subjects he touched on led me to form my opinion.
My education on paper and from institutions is unimpressive and limited due to my inabiltiy to afford anything but "community college" and after my brief experience with that I concluded that it was an absolute waste of money for anything but "cooking for dummies" or "knotting rugs for beginners". I spent my time and money on books and practical experience and believe it or not it got me somewhere.
I apologize for being decerning, but it comes naturally, as does my need to call a spade a spade, and sh*t, well, sh*t.
If you feel the need to call me an elitist, feel free, but I is a farmer's grandson, a rig pig's boy, and a student of the hardest knocks money can buy. That means my neck is as red as anyones here, but I can read good.

Again, for the sake of the rest of us, use a modicum or reason when writing something that can be published. The plain truth written simply will be far more powerful than wordy nonsense, mingled with threats and brash rubbish.

This is what qualifies for journalism back east? Damn, this man couldn't be more liberal and anti-gun if he was painted red!

Bad news sells, and the more 'bad' these 'scribblers' can make the news sound, and sensational, the more papers it sells.

These guys need to chill, they are using a ICBM to get their point across, when regular mail is more sufficient.

I don't have children, but if I did I would beat them mildly when necessary, and perhaps moderately on occasion. This has nothing to do with firearms ownership, sometimes children require a "fresh one", and sometimes parents are there to deliver it.

If this phucktard actually knew how much work hunting can be he'd realize why him and his ilk go to the supermarket.

My stuff at least had a life beyond a 2x4 crate.
