Thanks Jerry (Mystic Precision)for suggesting this book! I just got it two days ago and I am squeeezing it for all the info it has! LOL! VERY, VERY informative and well laid out! Some parts I have to read 3-4 times to catch the jist, but I'm getting there. I think it will teach the average guy a SOLID understanding of external ballistics (and physics) in a practical, usable way. It has straightend out a few of my preconcieved notions. Its like candy on paper! I am really enjoying learning this stuff! I really look forward to put some of this new knowledge to use and gain some valuable experience afield! If anyone sees this book for sale, "GET IT!!!" I think Mystic Precision sells these online. I hope Jerry doesnt mind me doing this.

I've been considering it, but I want something with a proper treatment of the mathematics. I know that isn't most people's cup of tea, but I actually prefer working with models and equations rather than tables.

Does this book cover that aspect of things?

Get "Modern Exterior Ballistics" by Robert L. McCoy

Brian Litz's books contains no equations but should be read since it's a goldmine!
It contains an excellent intuitive explanation of external ballistics, some excellent discussions, data and results.

Do not buy McCoy's book if you don't enjoy solving equations!!!
The reference work on exterior ballistics is "Modern Exterior Ballistics" by Robert L. McCoy.
This book is the real "Bible Of Ballistics For Propeller Heads!".

Bryan uses a few basic equations, more geared for the Layman "ME". If you like equations, this may not be the book for you. I am not really strong with my math, but enjoy some of the mind grinding this book gives! I have yet to use the ballistics program that comes with it. I am only 1/4 done the book so far. Too many family obligations to be able to spend much time reading. Take care guys, have fun, and straight shoot'in!

It (or at least the first edition that I have) is a wonderful book and I recommend it without hesitation. That said, my only "complaint" about it is precisely that Bryan has as much as possible avoided going into the math and the internals (though if he did it would completely change the character of the book, so I have to admit that he has probably done the right thing).

If you are interested in the math and models a good place to start would probably be JBM Ballistics web page, specifically the Topics page. Looking at the FAQ over there I see this:
  • Where can I get the formula for these programs?
The source code to my old CGI programs is now available under the GNU public license -- see my downloads page. I have also put the programs that I received from Bob McCoy in the downloads page of this site. The "formula" for the trajectory program is available in various sources, including the downloads page. It does involve "numerical integration" of the equations of motion (as I have implemented it...). The Sierra Reloading manual has a section on Exterior Ballistics which provides the differential equations of motion, as does "Exterior Ballistics" and "Mathematics for Exterior Ballistics". Calculation of a trajectory also requires calculation of atmospheric density as a function of temperature, pressure (sometimes humidity, if you want). I

JBM also has a Bibliography page that you might find useful.

dthunter, I am very happy that you are enjoying the book and appreciate the referals and kind posts.

This book is not for the math crunching shooter. It covers external ballistics in layman terms. A solid overview which will help any LR shooter understand the CONCEPTS. Not be able to derive them mathematically.

There are definitely books that are math intensive BUT many readers complain, they don't understand the point of all that math. The opposite problem ajarmst has.

The Litz book would be a perfect introduction to cover the concepts with the other books able to offer the math.

Let me know...

I also recently purchased the 2nd edition from Mystic Precision.

I have been playing the distance game for about a year now and Brian's Book has really opened my eyes to some of the things that either i neglected to inform myself about or just wasn't aware of.

I reads well and is laid out in a simple straight forward manner.

Well worth every penny spent.

Thanks for the advice, all. And I agree that the book in question sounds like a good reference, whether or not it fulfils my particular quirks.
