I need to document myself about the basics of optics;

What is parallax.
What is a red dot, a hollow...thing and what is there use and difference with a standard scope.
I want a scope for hunting with my 870 with a rifled barrel.

Is there a thread here that explains all that?? Feel free to redirect me.

Thanks.

I will let the more knowledgeable answer more indepth, but I believe parallax refers to the mechanisms involved with how high or low the bullet hits as the range changes and how you adjust that in your scope, to compensate.

as for red dot, it's also called military dot, but basically instead of any form of crosshair in your scope, you have just a single dot in the center of the view which would represent where the crosshairs would cross. red dot is usually used on non-magnified scopes, tho it is in some.

as for a scope recommendation, I don't know enough about them yet to offer any advise. stating what your willing budget is will help others that are in the know, to give you suggestions and recommendations. :)

"Parallax" quote from cgn search engine
Parallax is...
When the image of the target, and the reticle, are not in EXACTLY the same plane, and by moving the eye up and down... or side to side, either the target OR the reticle appears to move in relation to the other.

You might see the target move and the reticle stay still, or you might see the target stay still and the reticle move over it... both are exactly the same, and which you see, is only a matter of your OWN perception.

It is NOT possible to have parallax while moving up and down, but not have it when you are moving side to side.

If you think that is what you have, you have other problems... either you are moving the rifle, or you have eye problems.

If I was going to scope an 870 I'd go for a red dot or hollo type optic which is basicly a tube or a glass window with a visible dot for sighting....just put the dot where you want to hit and pull the trigger. The dot is not a laser that is projected onto the target but when looking through the device you will see the dot over top of the target. These devices need power and have batteries for the most part.
You can also buy a low magnification variable scope in the 1-4 range...some are made for shotguns and may have heavier cross hairs and be tuned for shorter distances (parallax) so that your target is in focus at less then 100 yards.
Do a google search for more info on parallax but I'd simplify it buy saying it's the ability to tune your scope at shorter ranges..most hunting scopes are set for 100 yards and rimfire scopes at 50 yards. If you are shooting rimfire at less then 50 yards it's nice to have an adjustable objective to adjust the scope for the exact range you are shooting which will minimize error if your eye is not perfectly lined up with the center of the glass and allow for things to be in focus at close range.
Parallax problems are more a target shooters concern then a hunters.

For Shotguns, Aimpoints or an EoTech would be the Cats A$$.................they are Parallax free.......meaning you don't have to be looking directly centered through the scope to be on target.................if you head position is off a bit, but you can still see the Red Dot, you will still hit what you are aiming the red dot at..........these optics are perfect for snap shooting.............

SKBY.

I made some research on the net and the RED DOTS seam to be quite expensive. My budget is somewhere aroud 250,00 $.

What is the ideal distance to use the red dot?

Thank you all for your answers. Hope to have more!!!
