Appropriate mounts for a m96 swedish mauser action?

I had been hoping to put a set of Talley quick detach or leupold quick release rings on my swedish mauser action, however I'm now out of my depth.

As far as I can tell, neither leupold or talley make mounts for the m96 mauser action, and since the reciever ring and rear reciever bridge aren't equal heights, I'm a bit stumped.

I'm not sure if it would be viable to mount a contoured plate underneath the base to give it the added height, that the screws would run through into the reciever itself.

Alternatively, are there extra thick bases made for the purpose of being fitted to guns that're not typical?

Finally, have side mounts utterly and completely fallen out of style? I have several ww2 milsurps with reproduction or original side mounts that shoot beautifully, so I don't see why they shouldn't be around.

If sidemounts are still made, who makes them?

Edit - My reason for wanting quick release or side mounts are so that if I end up in a situation where I feel my scope may be off and cannot resight I can simply use the irons on the gun, and then try resight the gun later, without having entirely dismounted the whole scope assembly.
That's my justification. In general, I don't trust scopes, and want quick release, or some way of using irons easily if I so choose, and I dislike see through mounts.

Well, by back tracking through midway to find the redfield base I found the correct talley bases:p Crisis averted.... never fails, I speak publicly and make a fool out of myself:rolleyes:

Now for the next question - to save us from clogging up the optics thread with similar questions:

Anyone know if the Talley small ring bases ( stock # 252722 ) will mount on a swedish small ring action if the raised clip slot is still intact? I've sent a message to talley to check, but figured I would ask here.

Looks like you've found a solution, and I do like Talleys. Just to offer another alternative though, if you were OK with a set of Weaver bases, you could then go to Leupold Quick Release rings (the ones with the levers) made to fit a Weaver style base. I think they call call them "WQR" for Weaver Quick Release. That's the set up I put on a 99 Savage in .358W. It would work well if you had a couple different scopes set in the QR rings and wanted to change them up once in a while, or if you just wanted to remove the scope and use the irons.

I considered that, but talleys also have quick detach rings. Not sure about the difference in prices, but similar function. (And leupolds website doesn't have any way of determining which bases fit what make/model of gun, other than the oft mentioned and ever elusive "firearms chart", which I have yet to find.)

The Brownells catalog lists as follows: HVA, Swedish 96 small ring Mauser: REAR - #955-000 030 (their stock#)....S55 (the Weaver#), FRONT #955-000-026 (again Brownells stock #)....S46 (the Weaver#). Not sure that's your rifle, but you could call Brownells (641 623 4000) and check it out. My catalog is a few years old, and those numbers were for Weaver Grand Slam Bases (steel), which at the time were priced at $11.70 U.S. each.

I like the Redfield one piece base because it makes alignment simpler in my estimation. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but that's the way I felt about it when I installed one.

I know some folks like the one piece for that reason. I'm one of the guys that hates having that bar across the top of an open action...I know, I know, the scope is there anyway, but that's just me.

Some Swede sporters have the iron sights mounted quite low on the barrel.
Have sometimes had to use bases with 'grooved' tops in order to even see the iron sights.
A check with the calipers will prevent some vivid workbench profanity at installation time.:bangHead:

If the one piece redfield mounts will allow me to use the Leupold Quick detach weaver style rings I think that's the route I'll take. Anyone know?

Hahahaha - yep, I already forsaw that. I'm planning on making a taller front and rear sight once I know where the scope is going to sit.:D

As far as I know, while Redfield does make some "Weaver style" rings, all of their bases are made as Redfield style. If that is correct, then the Redfield one piece will not accept any Weaver style rings, including the Leupold WQRs. It seems there's always a hitch of some sort.

The redfield base will only accept the Leupold standard rings (dovetail front, notched rear) STD i think they are referred to as. They will not accept the quick detach weaver style.
