A friend and I are looking into the legality of manufacturing our own 597 barrels and they would finish out to about 12" to 13". Who would be interested in buying one and what would you pay? We both have 597's so the barrels would be well tested to ensure both that they worked and retained accuracy. They would be made from a heavy barrel blank and cut, crowned, and fitted to a 597. There would also be an option to have the end of the barrel threaded 1/2x28 for add on accessories such as a flash suppressor or compensator. Lets hear your input please.

I'd buy one. It must have a threaded barrel. I paid $150 for my 8.5" 10/22 barrel. So around that range would be my max. Lower is better though.
(holy crap! This is my 999th post! ahhhh...time well wasted!)

Reply to my nonsensical retort, and get to 1,000 - pronto! :D

$150 sounds quite decent....:)

Ok, understand the we aren't Butler Creek or some other big company. We two normal guys playing at an idea. The more numbers we have the lower the cost cause its going to involve the buying of tools for the lathe and barrel blanks, which will be quality blanks not factory seconds. Hand machined to precision specs, not punched out in huge lots. Prices will probably run around the $250 depending on the costs.

Now, y'see, what you did there was bring logic into it...:(...still sounds interesting. ;)...And remember what a 10/22 GM barrel tends to go for - it does put things into perspective. :yingyang:

Hmmmm...... if you did that, I may be forced to buy a 597...... :D

Now, if only they made a solid hi-cap steel-lipped mag...BC, are you even listening? :p

Okay, and if they made a hi-cap steel-lipped mag for the .22 WMR model, I think I'd elevate Remington to worship-level....:)

I think you should do it, there is a lot of 597 out there and no aftermarket short barrels for them, advertise it well and it will sell.

Couple of questions:
1. Are you familiar with rifling barrels, and what are we looking at for twist rate on 12" barrel?
2. Stainless, or blued only, and is fluting a possibilty?

We would be using pre rifled bull barrel blanks and twist rate would depend on that. We'd be chambering and crowning ourselves. We'll be starting with just regular bull barrels right now but we're also looking at possibly stainless as an option. Other options like fluting and such might be available later but just kind of testing the waters right now before investing in a ton of machinery and tooling.

There are so many 10/22 aftermarket items out there and we're just starting out so I'd rather do a few really good quality items previously unavailable then try competing with really big companies who I can't beat in the price department. 10/22 has aftermarket out the a$$ when the 597 in pretty limited accept for some volquartzen items.

I'm putting the finishing touches on my 11" barrel that I made up this weekend. The barrel was easy enough but the breach block was rather tricky to get right.

Be forewarned that the location of the barrel and guide rod holes is rather critical as the bolt face recess is quite tight and any miss alignment can result in the bolt clipping the cartridge rim and not seating fully forward (the prime cause of light strikes and FTF's with the 597 and its high cap mags). The worst case scenario is an out of battery discharge since the 597 trigger will reset and release regardless of bolt position.

The firing pin is slightly inset from the rim of the cartridge as well with the 597 and if the barrel hole is drilled too high you will end up with FTF's even tho you have solid strikes. A custom linear strike firing pin would be required to remedy that dilemma (don't ask how I know...)

I'd be thrilled to see some aftermarket parts for the 597 as I am quite fond of the simple (and in my mind ingenious) design of the thing.
