Approximate Value of K98 Mauser

the rifle is rare and not easy to come by they are usually excellent shooters and are mostly all matching except for the obisious norweigan changes , what you sell it for is up to you but you wont be able to find one just anywhere and when you do expect to pay a heafty fee for it

The story about the Norwegian government destroying K98'S is true(the horror). I think they scrapped the barrelled actions and sold the stocks in Europe to guys like Mario Kabalt in Holland who is very popular with K98 collectors. I also read about a guy in Norway who bought several hundred complete rifles with an eye to selling them in the U.S. and making a bundle and was blindsided by the government's ban on firearms exports. He got stuck with the lot and can only sell them in Norway for MUCH lower prices.

Ive read a few forums where the OP says the bayo is matching to the rifle. But from what I understand this cant be. The bayos were made in a different factory and were handed out with the rifle.

Is this right? or can you actually find a matching set?

Export contract rifle can be found with match bayos. I have a Port contract k98 with matching bayo.

Contract rifles did have matching bayonets as they were matched before exportation. The same goes for spare barrels with contract MG34's. Each spare barrel would be matched to the MG and the case would be marked accordingly.

Wehrmacht rifles were not matched to bayonets. The serial number on the bayonet is specific to that bayonet or sometimes scabbard. However the serial number on the bayonet does not need to match the serial of the rifle. This was discussed in the book "Kriegsmodell". Before reading that chapter on bayonets, I always assumed that the rifle, bayonet would be matched, however my assumption was incorrect.

I have a 1940 stamped K98 Mauser that was retooled by the Norwegians to shoot .30-06 Springfield. All numbers matching with original bayonet, carry strap and cleaning rod. Very good condition. What is it worth??

About 6 months ago an Ontario dealer had a Norwegian K98 for $499 --- it sold the same afternoon it was listed. I agree with the other posters that the price should be in the $650+ range, easily.

Brazilian 1908s and 1935s were also issued with matching bayonets. Just about all contract Mausers were issued with matching bayonets. They seldom managed to stay together though.

Wow! This thread has had a life of its own without me. I sold my K98 for $475 w/o the bayonet locally (I misplaced the bayonet someplace).

Add the bayonet and the price would be about $600.

No disrespect CanadianAR. I'm just saying that if gunnutz don't want to be paying exorbitant money for milsurps then we need some realism in pricing. We all know about the $1100, $1200, $1400 Garands that have been posted in the EE in the past while.

I agree with you. I don't agree with the $1100 price. I think its really high. I was just illustrating that particular sellers point of view.
And yes, I agree with realism pricewise, but its not just here.
Epps just sold a garand for 1200, my local auction just sold one for a $1000. Its everywhere. A lot of people are misinformed and maybe just think stuff is worth more. But like you said, what you ask and what you get can be extremely different pictures. Especially so in todays economy.

With all my respect to all you guys and especially to the original owner who is the great gentleman: I ask what I think this gun is worth and if you think I'm misinformed, so, perhaps the majority of the sellers here are misinformed as well.
There's one listed outside of CGN for 1635.00. He thinks his rifle worth this much and so be it, I guess.

The one you are talking about has been sitting on his site for several months, and the rest of his stuff is wildly overpriced as well. There are certainly people who will pay it, convenience is a factor obviously, since they are not too commonly available now.

If yours is as complete as the listing makes it sound, it is probably a $900 gun to someone with the money. You say everything except the bolt handle and buttplate are original German #'s - is that the case for sights? Does it have the Norwegian sight or the German one?
