APRA Alberta Fullbore Rifle Association 2013 match Schedule

not sure if they have changed things in recent years, but APRA always had competitor target pulling, meaning you shoot a relay then pull a target for the next. might make that difficult but I'm sure the current experts would chime in.
 
My Grandfather shot at the APRA matches in the 50's and 60's, and I now have his rifle. I've never shot a 7.62 rifle before, is there a "beginners shoot" or class where I could learn to use it and shoot outside of a competition? To me it seems rather pointless to bring it to the Calgary Shooting Centre where I shoot pistols, as its only a 25m range.

If I ever did get into fullbore shooting, would a rifle that met the rules in the 60's still be allowed?

[EDIT} I just saw the new shooter day in the schedule. I assume that is at Homestead Range?

The short answer is no. we typically shoot two to a mound, alternating shots. When on the mound you shoot and score. Once the relay is over you switch place with the guys in the butts and pull targets while they shoot, alternating all match. Unless you bring someone with you to pull targets in your place while you shot a second gun it's not possible to do what you are asking.
 
I am super interested in competing in these weekend matches. I'm up in edmonton so it's helpful these are on the weekend.

I'm a simple person so I think I need some clarification on what I need to compete:

requires the APRA membership. $100 +100 new membership ?
requires the AFBA membership. $60 ?
requires match fee. $40 (sat and sun)?

is this all correct? and I can contact Mark and arrange payment?

Bile - Yes to all of the above. You could purchase a 2013 AFRA (not AFBA) shoot card for $125.00 that will get you into all AFRA Matches and practices, except the Provincials.

I am just getting into long range shooting and am attending Hungry's course at Longview in July. Would it be okay to just come and observe the April weekend to see what's up?

Dumptruck - We welcome spectators anytime. We also have a new shooters clinic on Saturday May 11th and a one day match the next day Sunday May 12th.

I am very curious on the Service rifle portion of this match. I am only familar wth the Service Condition where there is some movement involved during the shooting. Assume this will be static prone off the elbows type shooting? Using a rifle that qualifies for the Service condition format.

Love to get a link to the course of fire. Or is it just 2x10 off the elbow?

Is it possible to shoot Service rifle on Sat and F on Sunday?

I realise you DNF for one or the other day but the variety of two completely different styles of shooting would be a hoot.

Jerry - The AFRA Service Rifle is a sub section of the TR, so as you said it will be shot off your elbows / single shot / at TR targets / in TR format. The AFRA does not shoot any other form of Service Rifle Competition.

Yes you can shoot Service Rifle on Saturday, Service Rifle is only shot at short range, and then F Class on Sunday.

Are you allowed scopes in the SR part?

Muzzle brakes?

Lighter trigger pulls?

if there is a link to the rules that would be most helpful. Service conditions allows for quite a bit different options in gear

Jerry - The original AFRA post says:

"Service Rifle: DCRA Service Rifle (Competitors Equipment 5.03 Firearms)
Any rifle with any sight and in any caliber that meets range regulation’s, it must be a service rifle style rifle.
Other equip required = shooting mat, a spotting scope and if you use a semi auto a brass catcher of some kind"

Flash eliminators are allowed but no muzzle brakes (AFRA rule for all rifles), triggers must be safe. Muzzle brakes will interfer with adjacent shooters.

This is the first year that the AFRA has tried to incorporate Service Rifle into its shooting program. We want to see how this works out over the coming 2013 season.

Our first 2013 Match has been cancelled, as there is still a great deal of snow on the range.

That's a bummer Jay but was expected.

Any chance there are others out there who would be keen to get together, regardless of conditions, to put some rounds down range?
