APRA Alberta Fullbore Rifle Association 2013 match Schedule

I just got an email from Mark.

The road to the Homestead is washed out.#It will likely take several weeks to fix it.#Therefore all events at Homestead are hereby cancelled until further notice.# This includes this weekend.#AFRA Executive.

Looks not so good. Apparently army dudes are getting sent down south from edmonton for the flooding?

I hope this doesnt get worse.

Darn! Was looking forward to this weekend. Hopin the road is fixed in time for the next match. Gonna have to put in some trigger time at home I guess.

The road is not closed and hardly damaged at all. The bridge is also fine. Volker Stevin closed the road on Thursday due to the river running over it, but when the river went back down on Friday/Saturday we were able to get to the range.

Wondering if APRA member could tell me where is the closest place to a stay (motel our hotel) to the Homestead range? Any near good fully serviced campsites near by as well? Planning on attending a shoot or two and I'm traveling from the lower mainland BC.

There are several hotels to choose from in Cochrane. Those are the closest hotels at about 25 min travel time. Not sure about serviced camping but you can dry camp for free at the range. There are "rustic" toilets, no water or power.

I've travelled from Manitoba twice so far.

First time I camped at Sibbald Flats Campground. Was a really nice camping spot. Just a quick drive from the range. However, there are no reservations and apparently it fills up quick on a nice weekend from Calgarians fleeing the city. I arrived on a Thursday and had my pick of spots. I think it was something like $25 a night. I did spend some nights camping on the range. The only thing I didn't like about that was that it is a gun range; As soon as the sun is up, someone is shooting.

This past summer I left the tent at home and treated myself to staying in Cochrane as suggested by prairieguy. You have your pick there between major chains (Best Western, Ramada, Super 8, etc.) and local motels.

Have not heard of any reports from people who have stayed there, but there is a relatively new casino at the junction of hwy's 40 & 1 that is an option - you can come down hwy 40 then east on the Sibbald Creek Trail, then south on Homestead Road. Coming from BC also gives you Canmore as an alternative for hotels. I've also stayed at the Delta (pricey) in K-Country and drove out to the range a few summer evenings while on courses. Cochrane would be a fourth option.
