I am wanting to take my 16" Armalite AR-10 and through a good match grade 20" barrel on it, tune it up and turn it into a nice medium-long range rifle.

I was wondering what alternate cartridges that would fit in a AR-10 platform would be good for long range? I was looking in 7mm-08 but would like a few other options. I would be happy with .308 but just want to know my options.

Thanks.

The 6.5x47 has a short, fat case with a steep shoulder. Getting it to feed reliably in a semi might be tricky. Great cartridge, but I would go for the 260 or 6.5CM.

For what it's worth, my two cents is that you stick to .308 Win, and look for a barrel/upper with a rate of twist that will stabilize a 175 gr bullet like the Sierra Match King. For the last two years I have been putting together my own version of a rifle(the Knight's Armament SR-25) that I have fallen in love with. I had a custom 20" barrel made in the 5R MilSpec 1-11.25" style for it, and have assembled the whole thing around a MEGA matched upper and lower. I am 50 and have shot a lot of different calibres in my time, I keep coming back to the .308. It has the most common and readily available components for reloading, great barrel life, and an abundance of data. I have included a photo of the rifle(bottom one). Incidentally the other rifle, a Ruger Precision favours the exact same ammo and uses the same magpul magazines, nice to have commonality between my bolt and semi-auto .308's
Groups at 1008 yards vary between 9 and 12 inches with Federal GM Match 175 gr factory ammo.
The picture of the target was the first day of shooting the semi, and was at 400 yards, top flyer is the first shot.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking of one of the 6.5's because I plan on doing up a long range bolt action in a 6.5 as well. Lots of winter projects by the look of it.

I'm in the same boat as Ivan. Built myself a Mega MATEN and I'm picking up a second barrel for it today. Couldn't help but go with another 308, 1:10.

The reason for me to go with 308 again was brass availability. These things are hard on brass. If you have to resize and fire form brass all the time, you might lose interest...

Any way you decide to go, sticking with the 308 parent case is easiest. 243 Win, 260 Rem, 7-08, 308 Win and 338 Federal
