I hope someone can shed some light on this question. Why is the AR-10 with an 18.5" or longer barrel a restricted firearm?

I looked at SOR/98-462 PART 2 RESTRICTED FIREARMS Former Restricted Weapons Order subsection 2 The firearm of the design commonly known as the M-16 rifle, and any variant or modified version of it, including the (long list) and there is no mention of it.

It is not a variant, variant being a derivative model of an original and it is not a modified version of it. The AR-10 is the original for which all AR-15 style rifles are variants and or modifications.

Has anyone ever pursued this?

Thanks
Severus

Because the "new" varieties is classed as an AR-15 variant, and the originals are almost all converted-auto, there are rumors of a handful of factory semi-automatics being out there but I've never seen one.

I have a "true" commercial AR10, impoted from the factory in the 60's and you are correct it is NOT a semi auto only. It is an FA. I agee that few if any AR10's were produced as semi auto only.

So if we can get Norinco to make semi only AR10s they would be non-restriced?

IF they followed the original blueprints to the letter, I would tend to think so ... Doesn't take much for the RCMP/CFC to declare it an M16 variant though ... At the very least incompatible mag well and different and incompatible trigger assembly design.

Derivatives

Hi everyone and thanks for all this, it has been very informative. My line of thinking is that, as I understand it, the AR-10 was the source for the AR-15. The AR-15 being a scaled down variant of the AR-10. The later versions of the AR-10 apparently were/are scaled up versions of the AR-15.

Therefore, both are actually variants and or derivatives of the AR-10 despite improvements along the way.

It never ceases to amaze me that the prohibited list contains rifles that are very comparable to what we can own now and yet prohibited. If only common sense would prevail but I think I have a long wait.
