AR 10 build complete, lower from scratch

With subsonic ammunition, a suppressed .308 rifle can be almost totally silent (except for the sound of the action). It will function like a straight-pull bolt-action, though. Even with normal loads, the suppressor will eliminate the muzzle flash and make it much more difficult for someone to identify where the shooter is.

That's really interesting. It really makes sense that some ranges in Europe have mandatory noise suppressor rules so that it keeps the noise down. Too bad we didn't have that (logical) option; I bet allot of neighbors would stop complaining.

I guess if a person machines a frame then sends in the paperwork to have it approved, its not really a 'GUN' until the authorities say so? and in such case you've done all you can, so why NOT get it finished? What are you supposed to do? Put a trigger lock on it put it into a safe and hope they send you a letter saying its NOT a gun??? I mean you've done your part...its not the builders fault that a program that has barely scraped over the 2 million dollar budget by 998 million takes months to register a piece of milled aluminum.

Dogzilla, very good on you on the lower. Nice work.

About those uppers, we had a customer send us one lop to 20" and install a standard AR10 thread and aftermarket FH. As it turned out, it balance much better and the fresh crown isn't bad on a used barrel. Just something to think about anyway.

For some reason I reckon you could handle a cut, crown and thread. ;)

Cheers.

Im curious about how much that silencer could actually do to hide the sound of a .308...but I guess at those distances its probably about muffling it a bit more than complete silence?..or is so it can be shot with no hearing protection on??

A typical .30 cal suppressor will produce a dB reduction in the high 20's. As the dB scale is logrythmic, that equates to a several thousand times reduction in the the sound level. What this means in the real world is the SPL (sound pressure level) will end up in the mid to high 130's which is hearing safe or below the threshold for hearing damage from impulse noise of 139 dB.

From the user's perspective, a 137 dB gunshot will sound significantly quieter than the 155 dB sonic flight noise. It is also significantly quieter than an unsuppressed .22 rimfire rifle at roughly 140 dB.

With subsonic ammunition, a suppressed .308 rifle can be almost totally silent (except for the sound of the action). It will function like a straight-pull bolt-action, though.

Not quite. Subsonic .30 cal typically meters in the 127- 130 dB range, which is a long way from being totally silent. A suppressed .22 rimfire rifle can operate down in the 110 - 115 dB range which is about as quiet as a suppressed gunshot can be.

Typical suppressors lower off the shelf .308 ammo by 35 to 40 Db

Not even close. Even the best 556 suppressors can't match that kind of performance and they are quieter than 762 suppressors. A good 556 suppressor will do 32-34 dB. A good 762 suppressor maybe 28-30 dB.

Complete Upper with a 24 inch match barrel from wolverine $750.(traded in from the DND) Note the camo job stops about 4 inches from the end of the barrel. It also has an odd thread 11/16 24tpi. Suppressor?

Bump. This thread shouldn't die.

An interesting note. The Super SASS from Armalite seems to use a very similar barrel to the Canadian military models. Same profile, threading and 1:11.25 twist rate. It's 20" instead of 24" though.

My prototype AR10 model shoots .5 moa with 168 federal gold consistently. The Armalite match trigger sucks though. Better than standard AR but not really match.
