Currently overseas there are small numbers of AR-10T and C7CT avail for use in the rifle companies. They are being used to good effect, generally by sniper qualified personnel employed within rifle companies and before anyone asks, no this does not mean we doctrinally employ Designated Marksmen. The weapons are tools available in the box for a commander. The rifles are popular with users and are getting the job done despite occasionally being in rough shape. See my previous post about replacement.
The rifle company guns have standard barrels, no suppressors. Sniper spotter guns are fully kitted out with suppressors and employ a standard Armalite barrel (1:11.25 right hand twist). The 7.62mm gas guns are usually used with match ammo.
Not every unit will employ their allotment of guns exactly the same. It is up to the commandin officer and the recommendations of his unit master sniper how the weapons are employed. If he chooses to push some of the guns out to the rifle companies, great. If not its his call. The guns are wasted without trained troops behind them and the rules of engagement to support their use. Afghanistan ROE are strictly OPSEC and can not be discussed.
Which brings the discussion back to designated marksmen and snipers. Snipers are considered a "weapons system" and employed as such with special consideration and control at the highest level. DMs are basically weapons of opportunity and are employed as combat power available to the commander at the lowest levels with fewer control mechanisms needed. Another gun in the platoon with enhanced capability, range etc.
As soon as we get our filthy hands on some to start shooting I can post some pics. I'm looking forward to it.
