So someone school me on this.

What's the hype factor on the M14s these days? Is it because they're finally coming off a boat from China? US military reusing them in Iraq? Or could it be both?

I guess with an AR10 vs. M14 debate, someone ought to say that one is black/assult rifle while the other is battle rifle. Oh and M14 is non-restricted which is a big thing for us. :p

But in terms of the design themselves, which one is superior? I heard the AR10 is more accurate, but is it less reliable?

Are you referring to original AR-10s, contemporary with the real M-14? The AR-10 MAY have had to go through a debugging cycle had it been used in quantity, but so did the M-14, and the AR-15/M-16.
Original AR-10s are impressive rifles, and had they been produced in larger numbers would probably be still in regular use. They are impressive rifles.

with restricted/non restricted out of the way i would select the LIGHTEST, most reliable, well made and accurate rifle. That would have to be the AR10.

I like the m-14 because the gas system keeps the rifle cleaner, and i find the rifle is generally easier to clean. But I do like the mag attachment method fo the ar-10 better than the m-14. Overall it is a very close call.
I prefer the m-14.

Fro complete modularity I like the AR-10, can be a carbine or change it be a long gun. M14s are great, but if you could only hunt with an AR-10. As for reliability they are both excellent. I think mainly the only real factor is the non-restricted/ restricted factor. And now the M14 has new stocks available and all kinds of extras so it is becoming more modular too sure helps out in the popularity department.

DaveGP... That's no AR10 in your avatar... Kinda makes me think you have a soft spot for your BM59/M14...;) :p :D

Cheers
Jay
P.S. M14 has the edge in Kanada cause of the non-restricted class...

So what's interchangable with between AR10/AR15?? I assume most of the furnitures (grips/stocks... maybe handgards?) are already interchangable?

Are the M1A/M14 currently used by US military semi-auto or F/A?

When I first saw and shoot the AR 10 in the 80’s they were far superior to the M16’s, they are the only AR’s that I like. I suspect the reason the M14 is seeing action over the AR-10 is that the US military still had them in stock (Are you listening Canada, pack those FN’s in grease!) and were able to bring them back in service quickly. To get the AR-10 into service, you will have to let tenders and build a production line capable of handling the orders. I think the current productions is quite small. The advent of the 6.8 AR will likely remove any desire to produce AR-10 for military service.

True, the 6.5 is better at longer ranges than the 6.8, but from my reading the difference is moot when used in short barrels (M4) reduces the amount of rounds in the mag to 17, and would require a major re-design of the feeding system of the MG’s in US service. Although at the longer ranges the 7.62 NATO will outperform the 6.8, the difference will be far less than the 5.56 and problem will not be worth fixing by introducing a new weapon. Mind you logic and arms sales rarely go together.

Modern AR-10 versus Norinco M14S... Well, my personal opinion is that the AR-10 has slightly better accuracy potential than the M14S (with appropriate mods). Recoil on the AR-10 is noticeably sharper than the M14S, and of course, it gets dirtier. Soft points will not feed reliably in the AR-10, but this is not much of an issue since you cannot hunt with it anyway.

It really depends what you are looking for, but if you are on a budget, I would go with the M14S and add "improvements" over time. If you have a good budget to work with (and a restricted PAL), and only plan to target-shoot, I would get a flat-top AR-10.
