AR-15 10 round pistol mags

I understand that the Ar pistol mags can be able to take 10 rounds legally because it is for a pistol not a rifle. Now when you put that in a rifle is it still legal. I was told rescently that it is legal because it is based on what the mag was intended for (pistol). I know a lot of guys use them...have a few myself. Whats the scoop?
Please no posts about use the search function... I tried the search function and is sucks.

Here is the answer.

Strangely enough, the wording is such, that the limits are on what the mag was designed for, rather than what it is used in at the moment. So if a rifle and a handgun use the SAME mag, and you switch them around, the mag that came out of the rifle would still be limited to 5, even if used in a handgun, while the 10 round handgun mag would in this case be OK in a rifle.
I don't make the rules, I just report them.
