Ronins not a j**k*ss.....and I understand from where his comments come. ANYONE could come on this site... posing as a legal firearms owner and ask the question that started this thread. I don't blame Ronin for his attitude....... nor am i offended by his reaction to what I'm sure he feels is a "distasteful" topic to be discussing in the wide open realms of the internet.
Being new here... WSM, you will realize that topics like this one..... cause some people to tug the tinfoil hat down a lil further and others.... and rightfully so... don't want these topics discussed period.... and I understand why... even if you do not.
johnny gangbanger can come on here, talk all savvy and have us believe he's "one of us".... meanwhile he takes the info and contacts he has gleaned and puts it to use in his back shed......
then again.... Johnny gangbanger could really be johnny law and is fishing for some poor dumbass to say something that could be incrimminating.

I'd hate to read a headline this summer: "2 Officers killed by 16 year old with homemade assault rifle"

Would it have been a guy that had been around awhile,it would be no biggie.
But as a first post,it rubs me way wrong
We have a problem as it is with ppl obtaining illegal guns,let's not help em out.

guys, at first i too was offended by ronins attitude until i spent some time in legal forum. From what i read, Canadian laws are out to lunch. LE is just waiting to pull the trigger gun owners. And from the sounds of it, they'd rather bust a legal gun owner than some gangbanger just to say the system isn't working.

I can see this is a hot topic and for a first post, not a good choice. Anyways, like i said, i came here to learn and it's a great site for that.

If someone was after illegal guns, breaking out calipers and machining tools would probably not be high on their list same could be said about posting it on an open forum on the internet.....

Why does post count matter? I have 1600 posts, how do you know I'm not with NWEST on a fishing trip?

Let's recap.

First of all the process of completing an 80% (sorry GT, that is what they are and AFAIK Dlask still sells them) is cost prohibitive for a one shot deal.

If you already have most of the tools the cost goes down only a little. To do a first class job to mil spec you need at best a milling machine, and at the least the patience of Job and a rock steady hand. Bench top drill presses work for the small holes but you need a variable speed (down to 200 RPMs) floor mounted press to ream the buffer and then tap it. Be prepared for trouble if you don't the tap it right the first time. This is a big ####ing tap so you need a big ####ing wrench.

So, you have the holes drilled, great you think, almost there. Not by a long shot. The rear take down lug pocket has to be milled. You can do it the easy way using a milling machine or the hard and inaccurate way with a dremel. This is where you have to start fitting the fire control group and upper to the lower. It ain't a one shot process, it requires fitting.

Ooooops, almost forgot. Some 80% forgings also require mag well milling. Don't want sticky mags do we?

All done? Not quite. You have to make sure everything fits tickety-boo. Looks good, everything tight, take down and pivot pins slide smooth and all parts fit perfectly. You are ####ed at this point unless you have considered the tolerance required for the anodizing and/or painting process. It's not much. Anywhere from .001-.002" but it makes a helluva lot of difference when it comes to piecing the project together. What may have fitted perfectly before anodizing will not fit after I know.

Wanna save some more money before anodizing? Go out and buy a sandblasting cabinet and some blasting media. This is a must if you don't want to pay the anodizing guys any more money than you have to. Better yet, spend $400-$500 on an anodizing DIY kit. (actually you can DIY for a lot cheaper but you have to know what you are doing).

I was lucky. Over the years I built up a pretty decent collection of tools for my shop. I had everything except for the big ####ing reamer and tap. I even had a sandblasting cabinet and a hobbyists anodizing setup. It still took me 2 times to get it right. The first time I screwed up on allowable tolerances. It is not hard to screw up what is suppose to be precise.

No matter what you may have read about an 80% lower and how easy it is to complete, don't believe it. It is not easy, it is time consuming and requires extreme attention to detail if you want to do it right.

Would I do it again? Bet your ass. There is a great sense of accomplishment in completing such a project. My first attempt was a failure of sorts. The second attempt was almost perfect. My next one will be awesome because I have learned from my mistakes.

Almost forgot. While the sense of accomplishment is paramount, knowing it still has to be registered is truly a downer.
