I'm putting together my first lower and have run into a snag. It is an NEA lower with the hole for the rear takedown pin detent drilled into the underside of the receiver next to the safety detent hole. For the life of me I can not get the pistol grip on without kinking one or both of the springs. Any tips/tricks?

Does the grip fit kind of tight ? might need to use something to drive it on straight , like a mallet or 2x4 , you don't need to hammer it hard , so everything lines up going on .

Which hole is longer, the receiver or the pistol grip? Try seating the spring in the longer one. The other thing might be to support the spring with needle nose pliers with your left hand as you slide the pistol grip on with your right hand, and seat the pistol grip screw with your third hand. As the gap closes, the pliers will help prevent the spring from escaping.

You Tube is your friend. The safety/selector and the rear take down pins are done separately. Unless NEA is completely different.
1. Start with the safety selector. Invert your receiver, put he detent and spring in the hole, align the pistol grip and start threading the screw in. Slowly tighten it up, ensuring that the spring remains straight and not kinked.
2. Same thing with the take down pin. If your using a telescopic stock, worry about the buffer retaining pin and spring first, thread the buffer tube/receiver extension in so that it catches first, then worry about the takedown pin and detent. you will see how it all flows together.

You can dip the springs in Vaseline or grease to keep them from falling out of the grip holes and use white grease as a binder for both detents in the receiver. Hold the lower and grip sideways and avoid tilting one up or down.
Before installing the grip with the springs work the grip on and off of the receiver minus the hardware as a trial run to open up the grip.
NEA lowers are different. Takedown detent hole and safety detent hole are both held in by the grip.

Assemble all the "springy" bits inside a large clear plastic bag. That way you won't loose the springs and detents when they start flying around.
Beside being afraid of suffocation, I don't have any plastic bag big enough to fit both the rifle and me.
