AR-15 Contoured Barrels

Newbie AR question...what if any are the advantages or disadvantages of an AR-15 having a contoured barrel or is it basically just preference.

If you are talking about what I think you are then it's an absolute necessity, a grenade launcher is like the first mod anyone does to their ar15. I think thats what it's for.

I editted my original post, I think the correct description is a contoured barrel.

The step only serves one purpose that I know of- to accept the mounting hardware for an M203 grenade launcher.
