Ar-15 for newbie

What did you end up building if I might ask?

Built an A1 'Nam style clone.

Total cash in was under $900.

Picked up whatever I could used on the EE to save cash.

This thing shoots accurate man, the long Gov profile 20" barrel is where it's at for these rifles.

I don't baby it, when I finish a group I just toss the rifle on the grass/dirt before going to check my target at the range lol Many hundreds of rounds through it now without an issue.

The lower is DPMS, the upper is old USGI M16A1 "LM" marked upper complete.

Barrel is a DTI.

Here's a pic:

Here's a pic of my brother holding her last trip out to the range, 600 + rounds down range that day without even a stoppage

If you want tight groups at long distance though, you may want optics so I would go with a flat top railed upper. But with a 20" barrel and practice if you're shooting under 300-400 meters, the AR15 with bare irons was made for those distances. You would be amazed what they can do in that configuration with irons especially 200 meters and under. You can also get a thin front post like I have on mine for slight improvement in precision.

Anything past 400-500 meters gets dodgey even with optics for the design of the rifle and the caliber. It was designed as a battle rifle not a sniper rifle. If you want precision accuracy out past 600 meters get a decent quality bolt action in a better caliber.

You can always get a flip up rear sight and keep it folded down so if you get tired of using the scope remove it and still be able to shoot iron sights.

I will not spend more than $1200 on an AR, I don't care what the receivers are made of or how much titanium adamantium the bolt is made of or whatever. These things are so overpriced for taking to the gun range to shoot holes in paper. Unless like I said you need to have the most expensive of everything to make the holes in the paper more tacticaller or something. I see very expensive very modded up AR's go up for sale on the EE every day in mint condition. Most guys must do them up to have the best of everything and every accessory them could find on the internet, then never touch them again save to wipe the oil from their fingerprints off them lol

I abuse my rifles. I don't like to have to worry about getting a scratch on the finish etc To each their own I guess.

The sweet thing about the standard configuration is that it is freakin' light! My rifle weighs in at a c*nt hair over 6 lbs!! I could have shaved off more weight if I could have found an original pencil barrel but the twist is too weak for heavier bullets and they are very hard to find without buying a whole rifle to get it or a complete upper (gets expensive so forget it lol)

I also don't like scopes or any tactical nonsense so I went with the A1 design, very happy with it, it's the rifle I always wanted but couldn't find for the price, so I built it lol

I want to shoot in the 100-200yrd range, an AR is something I have always had on my ( if I can afford one day list). Don't need for long distance sniping or killing zombies. Just enjoy the mechanics/ engineering of them and want to enjoy time at the range. I have been looking at the core line of rifles there seems to be a good supply and decent reviews on them.Good starting price point and be able to build on it as I get more into it.But if a BCM or Sig 516 came available I might jump on it.

By the way, you sound exactly like me before I built my A1 clone lol :D

Nice rifle like the old school original look, and the cost you put in it.I don't want a safe queen I want something to shoot! What is the website you find all your parts on? I'm starting to think that have the fun would be finding parts and the actual build of the gun. Thanks for the info Travis.

No worries man.

The upper receiver and barrel talk to Mugwug on here.

I don't know who he is but he knows people that can get things. Cheap and fast! lol :D

The lower I picked up off the EE kind of second hand for really cheap complete (DPMS)

The A1 stock and handquards/grip and 3 prong muzzle brake I scored from a buddy. He buys off private sellers for retro furniture off AR15.com

They have an EE section and almost all of them will ship up North as long as it doesn't violate any of the parts import guidelines (no bolts, frames, receivers, barrels etc)

They have tons of old retro stuff floating around their market so low low prices :D

Buffer tube, buffer etc just EE for dirt cheap.

The bolt and other small parts etc I just picked up wherever I could find them for cheap. They are all North American parts.

If you need A1 or A2 stock screws let me know I scrounged quite a few on my travels.

If you need help with anything at all just PM me Sir!

Thanks will do ( Eastern Ontario my old stomping grounds till I got lost out west)

They're a high quality rifle (everything is done properly - taper pins, staked keys, proper materials, proper testing) with top notch support, lifetime warranty and 'in Canada' service and they don't cost an arm and a leg - Stags are very popular with service rifle folks. I have yet to see a major problem with a factory Stag - or hear about one on here. The warranty service in Canada is very important - it is tough to ship an AR back and forward to the US.

Just about any quality ar will do just fine.

Could you clarify for me, what kind of targets are you using with iron sign at these distances ? Is is about just hitting man-size target, or hitting small paper plate ? I'm curios, as limitations of human eyes can contribute to the ability to shoot at distance with just ope sight.

I kinda disagree. Depends on what the OP's definition is on long distance. Out to 300 yards with an AR15 can be quite accurate. However it typically means buying a purpose built rifle or assembling your own. Which can be quite pricey. I'm hoping my first build I'm working on now in its early stages will punch 1" groups or smaller at 200+ yards.

300 yards is not long distance. Accuracy is dependent on the user and the role of the firearm. The OP indicated "small groups.." which in my mind is sub 3 inches at 100. A tough call with irons. Sure, the OP could spend insane money and build a precision AR, but he answered that question with the bold below. If budget wasn't a concern there would likely not be a thread.

Any quality AR will fulfill your desired role above. Irons or optics, but irons will limit your potential for small groups at any distance. I suggest you choose something with a flattop receiver for sure, and go from there.

+1 I have a few AR's....Stag is quality & a good price

Certainly.

With my rifle I posted up I can get 2-4" groups at 100 meters easily. Probably better with quality ammo but ain't nobody got time for that.

At 200 meters I shoot about 7-9" groups on average if I'm at my best.

I haven't shot groups at the 300 - 400 meters yet with her unfortunately but we had a torso sized piece of steel at the range the last time I was out with her. I'd say 2 ft x 3 ft and I was ringing it every time save for every third or fourth round at the 400 meters.

Again I'm no sharp shooter. I'm probably average shot at best and shooting junk/available ammo.

Ok, I see. And what are you using as targets at these distances ?

Regards,

I use a black spray painted square the same size as a piece of printer paper (8.5" x 11" I believe) with a 3" square of high vis orange spraypaint in the center of black.

That way I can use the black for reference and the orange for precision at 100 meters and still get consistent sight picture on the black square for 200 meters.

I picked up one of the thin front sight posts as well. Helps shrink groups very slightly.

I was in the same boat awhile back, but decided to lay a few more dollars out to get Made in USA quality. Norcs are less expensive, and run fine, but a bit of searching and an extra $250 will get you a much nicer rifle in my humble opinion... I decided on a CORE15, and love it.

irunguns.ca is a site sponsor and has CORE15 Scouts in stock for $899. It's already in Canada and there are no other costs other than delivery and GST... Pretty sharp deal if you ask me!

Good luck!

This 100% I love my core15 got it here on cgn and it rocks. Milspec takes all the add on goodies and looks great. Spent the extra money and won't regret it.
