Hi Guys,
I was wondering why would be a 9mm or .40 S&W be better than a .223 ?
What's the effective range for the pistol caliber ? It is usefull in IPSC ?
I never had an AR, but I'm looking to buy one that's why I ask.
Merry X-mas and a Happy New Year ! We'll have to fight the Lieberals !
So better be prepared !

well if it took pistol mags ala Glock...ten rounds and you could shoot it indoors

Becuase its cheaper, you can use indoors, Be good ~150M

For me I went with 9mm AR15 is becuase 223 is hard to get here, I cant use 223 indoors, then outdoor range is closed durring the winter.

I'll have a go at these in order:

Why would a 9mm or .40 AR be better than a .223.

Ammunition compatibility if you're shooting mostly handgun. If you have a .40 handgun or a 9mm handgun, and want to stick to one caliber. There's less stuff to worry about logistically (ie forget for a match) and if you reload, you can stick with a single load for both your long arm and your handgun. Having a single caliber also greatly reduces your required inventory for reloading components, brass, and equipment.

What's the effective range for the pistol caliber ?

A longer barrel will tend to impart greater velocity to the rounds, as well as tending to allow greater accuracy. That said, you're probably looking at a best effective range of 100-150 meters. (Ammunition dependant.)

It is usefull in IPSC ?

I would think so....but I'm not (yet) an IPSC shooter, so I'll deffer to experts on that.

Hope this helps,

NS

I do believe that Olympic Arms does .40 uppers, perhaps Hillbilly could tell us what make his is. I've also heard of conversions in .40 and .357 Sig being done on Colt type systems as well (Kurts Kustom Firearms?). Would it be possible to open up a Colt 9mm bolt to .45? I know that .45 mags won't fit in the receiver but I'd like to file away this knowledge for a future long term project.

There are some great uses for the .40 upper .especially if you have a .40 HG (Glock 22) . The simplicity of a mag system is also a serious cost saver. Maybe in the US where you can legally have high caps, the system would allow you to use your HG mag in your SMG. 30rd Shererer mags would be great for that. double your effective range

Just a question: since your .40 AR15 is registered as a restricted RIFLE, wont you be limited to 5 rounds (such as the FAMAE and RADOM)?

Neither would be better. Just different. Colt makes or used to make a 9mm SMG version called the M-16K. Looks like a CAR. Fabulous little thing.

It is a common misconception that the limit is based on the firearm a magazine is used in. Actually, the deciding factor is the firearm the magazine was designed FOR.

Most 9mm ARs use Colt SMG or modified Uzi mags. They are limited to five rounds.

Olympic Arms makes AR15s that accept Glock magazines. Glock magazines can hold 10 rounds regardless of the firearm they are inserted into.
